Another great evening of networking at Connect Links Networking at the Blue Lion in Witherley, near Atherstone.

This is a group I genuinely look forward to attending, and tonight was another reminder why.

We had two excellent presentations.

First, our host Donna Reed was joined by Cancer Research volunteer Cheryl Barnacle to tell us more about their Charity Ball taking place in March 2027. A fantastic cause and an event that already sounds like it will be well worth supporting.

Then Pam Carpenter of Avandra Training took us on a mini workshop journey – interactive, engaging and plenty to think about afterwards.

I also managed to fit in three really enjoyable 1-2-1s with Steve Brown, Chris Shaw and Charlie Reed. For me, that's where so much of the value of networking happens – getting the chance to properly talk, learn more about each other's businesses and build relationships.

I really do love this group.

And next month there is a little extra pressure... it's my turn to present!

Looking forward to it already.

Are You Measuring the Wrong Things?
A post receives fewer likes than usual.
Was it unsuccessful?
Not necessarily.
Perhaps the right potential customer saw it and visited your website.
Perhaps somebody saved it.
Perhaps it prompted a conversation three weeks later.
Perhaps an existing client noticed another service you offer.
Social media measurement needs more context than simply counting likes.

If you could put MarkNorthall.com into one picture… this might be pretty close!
Social media. Training. Strategy. Content. Networking. Clients. A bit of speedway. Travel. And yes, even the Mangoman makes an appearance!
But amongst everything going on in this image, there's one theme that probably sums up what I've been doing for more than 15 years:
People.
Social media may be the tool I work with, but ultimately it's about connecting people with businesses and creating opportunities.
I help businesses with:
Social Media Management 1-2-1 and Group Training Social Media Strategy LinkedIn Content and Visibility And making sense of platforms that never seem to stop changing!
Alongside that, networking remains a huge part of my working life because I've always believed the online and offline worlds work best together.
Meet someone in the room. Connect online. Stay visible. Build the relationship. Create the opportunity.
That's why two phrases on this image particularly resonate with me:
"Different businesses. Same goal. More opportunities."
and
"Same people. Bigger opportunities."
That's MarkNorthall.com.

Apparently this is what happens when you try to fit my working life into one picture!
Social media, clients, training, content, networking, Your BDM, Business Focus Burton… plus a little speedway, travel and even my Mangoman alter ego!
There is quite a lot going on.
But actually, there's a common thread running through almost all of it:
PEOPLE.
I've spent more than 15 years helping businesses use social media more effectively — whether that's managing it for them, providing 1-2-1 or group training, developing a strategy or simply helping them understand what they should be doing and why.
And throughout that time I've remained heavily involved in face-to-face business networking too.
Because I've never really seen the two as separate things.
Social media helps us start conversations, stay visible and maintain relationships.
Networking gives us the opportunity to meet, talk, understand and build trust.
Put the two together and you create opportunities.
So perhaps the quote in the top corner of the picture sums me up rather well:
"It's not just social media… It's people, relationships and opportunities."
That's what MarkNorthall.com has always been about.

This is what networking should look like.

25 people in the room at Business Focus Burton this morning for our Visitor Day – members, visitors, plenty of conversations and, hopefully, the beginning of some new business relationships.

For me, one of the most encouraging things wasn't simply the number of people who attended.

It was watching the room.

People weren't sitting waiting to be sold to. They were talking, asking questions, making introductions, learning about other businesses and finding out where they might be able to help each other.

That's networking.

We also had a very entertaining and informative feature presentation from our Graphic Designer Scott Pettingale, otherwise known as "the guy who does colouring in", and several of today's visitors have already expressed an interest in joining the group.

That's a pretty good morning in my book.

Thank you to everyone who came along and particularly to the members who invited visitors and helped make them feel welcome.

The challenge now?

Let's build on it.

Another Your BDM Tamworth done – and one of those mornings where both speakers gave me things to take away and think about in my own business.
Julie Barch from ITS 4 Point of Sale was our feature speaker and talked about the “messy technology” that can gradually build up behind a business.

Different systems that don’t talk to each other. Information being entered twice. Manual processes that really shouldn’t be manual. Reporting taking far longer than it needs to.

I particularly liked Julie’s line:

“People should not have to do a computer’s job.”

Then Andy Price from Initial IT used our education slot to bring cyber security right back to basics.

MFA. Strong passwords. Updates. Backups. Checking unexpected payment changes. And, importantly, knowing who you’re going to call if something does go wrong.

Nothing unnecessarily technical – just sensible habits that businesses can actually put into practice.

And then, of course, the networking.

Good conversations around the room, 1-2-1s and more opportunities to learn a little more about the people behind the businesses.

That’s why I continue to enjoy organising Your BDM.

It isn’t simply about turning up, delivering your 60 seconds and collecting business cards.

You learn. You talk. You build relationships. And occasionally somebody says something that makes you go back to your own business and change something.

Thanks to Julie, Andy and everyone who joined us at Tamworth this morning.

What Happens After Someone Connects With You?
Getting a new LinkedIn connection isn't the finish line.
It's the beginning.
You don't need to immediately send them a sales message.
In fact, I'd generally recommend you don't.
Stay visible. Engage with their content. Learn what they do. Look for genuine opportunities to help.
Relationships built over time tend to be far more valuable than an instant pitch.

Social Media Management Isn't Just Scheduling Posts
Scheduling software is useful.
But pressing "schedule" isn't social media management.
Good management involves understanding the audience, finding stories, adapting messages, monitoring performance, engaging with people and changing direction when something isn't working.
The software distributes the content.
The thinking behind it is where the value lies.
