Mumbles Motor Boat & Fishing Club Family friendly club dedicated to boat and shore fishing for members in West Glamorgan and Global Members can the boats through our web page.

We have the very best fishing boat, a Blyth 30ft (10m) catamaran for the exclusive use of Club members. Which can be booked for fishing trips to the many productive fishing marks in the Bristol Channel. We also have a smaller club boat the Mumbles Belle for inshore fishing trips with just 5 angers and a skipper. Oystercat trip 4th October,
1st trip for me for quite a while , so decided we should try over the otherside for a change , conditions were spot on and headed over comfortably at 20 knts . After figuring out the drift we were into fish straight away, some good size bass amongst the Scholies also good size po***ck , alongside monster scad and macky , unfortunately the ebb didn't fish so well but everyone had some nice fish to take home!

Oystercat trip 28th September. After three very productive trips this month, we hit rock bottom today..here there and everywhere from strombus to Oxwich with a few scad four gurnard, obligatory dogs and one string of mackerel. hadn't even given the guys grub. nice conditions good help on board . but comparatively a poor trip. Tough day aboard veebee yesterday.
we set off first thing down the worm in search of bass. conditions were not great and surprise surprise no bass at all around the worm.
So we made our way inshore by daggers reef and managed to hook 2 small po***ck.

for low water we headed to langland for bream but couldn’t find a single one.(or any fish for that matter) conditions were not great though - quite choppy.

when the tide picked up we headed off in search for bass again. we had a few bass but undersized unfortunately but did manage one keeper so had at least something to show for the day.

We then finished off the day off in the bay but this yielded nothing. so all in all a very challenging day with the sea conditions and lack of fish.

However we had good banter aboard the boat, tea and coffee to keep spirits up and a good look at the stunning south gower scenery if nothing else.

Well i dont know how to the class the trip, a good bad one i guess.

Left the pier heads and noticed birds working in the bay, this turned out to be a large shoal of schoolies with a sprinkling of mackerel amongst them, allowing us to catch enough for fresh bait for later on (good).
So move on for the main event, drifting the banks for bass, and although we spent nearly 2.5hrs trying we ended that session with nothing (bad)
Next, anchor up for a cuppa and some bream fishing, here was actually quite good, and although we didn't match the numbers caught on previous trips, we did return some in size fish to fight another day (good).
With everyone watered and fed we moved to deeper water to try for Tope.....nothing (bad).
Back for a bit more bass chasing....nothing (bad).
Finally we decided to anchor up and give general fishing a go, and at last a bit of success. Three Triggerfish (all to Triggerfish virgins), bream, Smoothound, huss, Gurnard, a Tope pup and loads of good sized pouting (good).

I guess any trip with 3 Triggerfish and 11 different species can be classed as good, although the lack of bass and Tope was disappointing.

Cat trip 22nd sept, still searching for fish other than another good day on the bream we tried a different part of the channel to start the day. A few conger landed a few more dropped on way up and a couple of huss made a slow but pleasant start. A fruitless drift for 50 mins over the ledges and again at anchor we had a good catch of bream, a few two at a time. biggest fish was on this mark a nice huss for Chay. John E

Oystercat trip 20th sept, with wind Saturday, and stronger than forecast today meant a local trip instead of port Eynon was to be. Luckily a show of birds on our exit from the river gave us the opportunity for baits for the day. Into Langland another good day on the Bream many good fish returned. Then out deeper to see what sort of toothies were about about, 6 small ( 4 baby) Tope and one about 27lb to yours truly, a few huss to a few people and a chop on the water leading to a planned lock in for the day. Oystercat trip 16th sept, with five names down for trip request and me not having an excuse like being in another country, I felt i could make the effort to take trip. Conditions not that good, with a fair swell running we had a slow ride to Langland to see if the bream had left yet. First drop for me and a bite almost straight away. A very nice fish (looked bigger when the others held it!). Then we had a great 90mins with bream coming to baits within no time being down, all had fish for the table with over 50 being returned. went downhill from there a quick drift over the ledges nothing and into the bay to finish added one small bream a Huss (me) and a gurnard. don't think anyone really cared after a great start to the day, John E ..it was a lot sloppier than the photos show!

Weather was pants all day for today’s trip on the Oystercat. We started the day local looking for mackerel and bass - that was rubbish then headed down to oxwich to see if we could find any mackerel there… that was rubbish too. By 9am we had only had 2 squid on board, no fish at all.

We dropped the anchor on a bit of wreckage, expecting plenty of pout etc to lift sprits but that was slow too - only 2 wrasse (one ballan and one Corkwing) and a few pouting.

We moved off onto the sand after a couple oh hours, we had a few dogs, scad, huss and a red mullet.

I did offer the guys an early finish before the lock closures but they wanted to stick it out, so after slack we came back closer to home and stopped on a bit more wreckage, more pout, bass, congers, a hound, a rock goby kept the rods rattling away to end the day.

Was very thankful for the water proof today! Sea state was pants, wind blew and rain fell all day, but it wasn’t all bad - there were terns feeding then getting mobbed by a skua in oxwich and we saw storm petrels off swansea and off oxwich which was lovely to see and is fairly unusual, normally seeing them further off shore but maybe blown in with the over night winds.

On my last 3 trips we’ve seen good numbers of bonito locally but we’ve not really had the right gear on board and often too many anglers to target them properly on the Oystercat, so yesterday the forecast looked ok for a go at them on vee bee (our smaller, quicker and quieter cheetah cat) late afternoon so I moved things around in work to finish early.

UNFORTUNATELY, when getting my gear together Thursday evening I noticed a few of the hooks on my intended lures were rusty but I couldn’t find my split ring pliers to renew the hooks so not wanting to risk a tackle failure, I *had* to take a trip to HR Jones on my lunch break to get some pliers… I *accidentally* forgot the pliers but left with a large dent in my wallet and a lot of new additions to my already huge lure collection.

On the way to the marina I knew we were going to struggle as the wind was a lot stronger than expected, we got out in good time but were greeted with pretty poor conditions for what we wanted to do with strong-ish wind and sloppy seas making spotting the busts really hard.

We did some searching around the area they’ve been in and found great numbers of feeding birds but it was just large shoals of small bass, scad and mackerel pushing bait up.
Was good fun on light spinning gear but not what we had wanted to target… but can’t control the weather.

Maybe we’ll get another shot at them before the seasons finished… but if not I’ve got enough lures for next year… and the year after 🤣🤣

Oystercat report 11th Sept
Not much to report, weather not great but swell supposed to flatten.
Found a few mackerel and scad on the defusers.
Then went in search of bass ,none to be found,anchored for a couple of hrs and had half a dozen bream and 3 doggies. Headed out to the banks ,here we did find some bass only 1 keeper and by now it was hard work with the swell increased as not forecast, some up to 2 mtrs.
Headed for home and the 5.30 lock.
Mackerel, scad,dogs Gurnard, bream and bass so not so bad thanks to all onboard.
