The vast majority of Clubs in Swansea are well established with many having celebrated their centenary. The Swansea Central Bowling League was formed in 1907 with the first competitive matches being played in 1910.

The enormous shield played for by First Division Clubs was presented by Mr. Alfred Mond to the Central League and named the 'Mond Shield'. The first winners in 1910 were Dyfatty Bowls Club and it has been played for ever since. The Central League was subsequently renamed the Swansea Bowling Association. Lawn Bowls has been extremely popular in the Swansea area for the past 100 years. At one time more than 35 clubs existed within a radius of no more than 10 miles. Swansea boasted in excess of 20 bowling greens, some private but mostly Council owned. At present there are 20 clubs playing in 2 divisions with a number of greens reduced to a dozen. Council cutbacks have affected the maintenance and subsequent closure of many greens. A number of Clubs share their green and generally the two teams care for their green admirably. Many bowlers from within our Association have gained both County and International Honours over the years. Terry Sullivan, has achieved Honours at the highest level. In 1984 he became the World Indoor Singles Champion, a magnificent achievement.

Our season commences in mid April and continues until the third week of September.

Many of our Clubs embark on an Annual Tour and we, as an Association, are always delighted to welcome touring teams from all over the country.

We are fortunate to be situated in a beautiful part of South Wales.

The sweep of Swansea Bay, the picturesque Mumbles, the dramatic Moorlands and beaches of the Gower Peninsula are all on our doorstep. The Brecon Beacons and the wonderful waterfalls of Aberdulais are a short drive away. Within the City itself, the market is regarded the best in Wales and a visit to the Waterfront Museum is a must. It is no wonder that touring teams are attracted to Swansea and the surrounding areas.

Bowls in Swansea is full on with teams playing in excess of 35 matches in a season in various competitions.

Come September, many bowlers switch to the Indoor game, based in the superb facilities of the Swansea Indoor Centre on the outskirts of the City. Bowls is certainly an all year round sport in Swansea.

The City and County of Swansea Bowling Association warmly welcomes touring teams. Please contact our General Secretary for details.

Another Successful Finals Weekend

Despite the poor weather conditions, our Finals Weekend was successfully completed on schedule.

We would like to thank Swansea Bowling Club for their hospitality in providing a well prepared playing surface and excellent bar and catering facilities which we all enjoyed.

Special gratitude to Bev & Ewan, who were an enormous help in the bar and kitchen.

A huge thank you to Enda who endured a number of soakings whilst officiating as our Umpire and to all the players and spectators who turned out in numbers to support this most enjoyable event.

Thank you also to our President, Terry Sullivan and our long standing Committee man Dennis Richards, both of whom assisted and presented the trophies to the winners and losers.
