Fibromyalgia and Massage Therapy 🤲

Fibromyalgia, characterized by chronic pain, fatigue, and cognitive dysfunction, affects millions globally. Its diagnosis is complex due to the absence of physical signs, necessitating a symptom-based approach. Massage therapy offers a non-drug treatment favored for its adaptability to the individual sensitivities of fibromyalgia sufferers.

Understanding Fibromyalgia Symptoms:

- Chronic pain mimics flu-like aching or sharp, intense discomfort.
- Severe fatigue renders limbs heavy, making movement laborious.
- "Fibro fog" impairs memory and focus, complicating daily activities.

Massage Therapy in Fibromyalgia Care:

- Begins with gentle techniques: myofascial release, connective tissue massage.
- Includes manual lymphatic drainage and Shiatsu for pain sensitivity.
- Adjusts pressure based on feedback, starting with short sessions.

Benefits of Massage for Fibromyalgia Patients:

- Lowers anxiety, depression, and cortisol, mitigating stress effects.
- Eases pain and stiffness, enhancing mobility and comfort.
- Improves sleep quality, addressing fatigue and promoting recovery.
- Boosts mental clarity, countering cognitive effects of "fibro
fog."

Guidelines for Effective Massage:

- Apply gentle, confident touch to prevent skin overstimulation.
- Start sessions short, extending as patient comfort and response allow.
- Personalize treatment, acknowledging each individual’s unique reaction.

Alternatives and Complementary Treatments:

- Cognitive behavioural therapy aids in managing mental/emotional challenges.
- Physical/occupational therapies improve mobility and ease pain.
- Meditation and yoga foster a mind-body connection, aiding stress management.

Wow how is it Friday already?? and what a day to finish the week on. International women’s day 🫶🏼. Just sharing this post from the SMA as I liked the quote. It’s thought provoking 🤔. Off to treat a client with shoulder pain now but have a great weekend everyone.

Today is international women's day. So here's to all the wives and mothers, the sisters and lovers that we know!

To those that help us make a life, and not just make a living!

To quote Maya Angelou - “I’ve learned that making a ‘living’ is not the same as ‘making a life.”
