Explained | Our sport’s new scoring system and its application in England

At Badminton England, we have taken time to discuss, consult and collaborate with our badminton community to consider why, where, when and how we should apply the 3x15 scoring format across the gamut of badminton competition in this country.

The new scoring system will officially come into effect on Monday 4th January 2027.

On Saturday, the Badminton World Federation membership voted to approve the adoption of a 3×15 scoring system at the BWF Annual General Meeting.

At Badminton England, we take pride in listening to our community. Your feedback was taken into consideration and rightly represented in how we approached this vote last weekend.

The new system will come into effect on Monday 4th January 2027 and Badminton England will now take some time to reflect on the details of this decision before working closely with all key stakeholders to consider the application of the scoring system in England.

This matter will form a focal point for our discussion at the next Board meeting in May – when the thoughts and opinions of our members will assuredly be at the forefront of our conversations.
