434 days since we last tasted victory, Boxgrove CC ended the 2026 season on a high with victory at Lancing Manor Cricket Club.

We turned up on a muggy, damp afternoon in Lancing hoping to finish the season on a high and lost the toss with the opposition choosing to bat first.

The opening bowlers of J. King and P. Mant (making his first appearance of the season) started well and picked up a couple of early wickets, leaving the score at 23-2 off 9 overs. J. Callnon then took an excellent juggling catch at point to pick up our 3rd wicket, followed by a catch behind by R. Wilcox.

Then followed a brilliant partnership of 84 with some big hitting helping Lancing Manor reach 170 before some excellent fielding from J. King and C. Ashdown led to a run out. Lancing Manor finished with a total of 225 for 5 off their 36 overs.

Another selection of excellent teas were enjoyed by all before we begun our run chase.

With the option of a draw on the table, the opening pair of J. King and T. Vinnicombe set about seeing how we would fair. The runs flowed at a steady rate and we reached the drinks break without losing a wicket with 105 runs on the board and ahead of where Lancing were at this point of their innings.

Both openers reached their half centuries and were batting sensibly, including some quick running between the wickets.

56 runs were needed from just 60 balls and those of us watching on the sideline were enjoying watching the spectacle. T. Vinnicombe reached thrid century for Boxgrove (his first since 2011) and the total kept creeping up towards the required figure.

With the ball smashed to the boundary with 7 balls remaining, we picked up our first win since July last year!

The partnership of 228* goes down as the fourth highest ever for Boxgrove and the highest partnership batting second to win a game!

Thanks to Lancing Manor Cricket Club for an excellent game played in great spirit.

A big shout out to all the players who have turned out for Grove in 2026.

The elusive first win of the season evaded Boxgrove once again with Broadwater taking the victory by the smallest of margins.

Boxgrove’s initial opponent, Pagham CC, called off on Friday but Broadwater kindly stepped in and offered to host, so a Boxgrove team arrived in Worthing on a cool but sunny Sunday afternoon. Boxgrove’s challenge made slightly more difficult with a series of drop outs due to illness and injury the morning of, resulting in Boxgrove only being able to take 8.

After losing the toss and being put into the field, the numerical disadvantage seemed not to matter when Jim King took the first wicket with ball 3 of the innings. Jim, alongside returning Frankie Ward, held a strong opening bowling partnership with Frankie also gaining an early wicket. Broadwater could not get large scores off the ground with Boxgrove’s field performing excellently. Strong bowling performances from Mike Clifford (2 wickets for 32) and James Callnon (3 wickets for 27) put Boxgrove in a great position, however Broadwater’s batter 10 came in hitting 24 in the last few overs to get them to a respectable, but beatable target of 165.

After a marvellous cricketing tea of waffles, strawberries and ice cream, Boxgrove started shaky in the bat, with Michael Clifford getting out for a duck in the second over. However, Jim King and debuting opener Matt Leary performed well until Tea where Boxgrove were 84 for 2. After Justin Wakelin’s dismissal for 13 off 11 balls, and once usual opening batsman Tom Vinicombe (who was batting in essence with one hand after injuring it that morning) was out for 15, a series of ducks fell with 2 overs to go, Boxgrove were all out for 154.

Our thanks to Broadwater CC for their hospitality and friendliness. Boxgrove have one final chance to get the win this season, facing Lancing Manor away on Sunday 13th September.

No fixture this weekend for Boxgrove.

Another enjoyable game of cricket yesterday against Slindon CC which unfortunately ended in defeat.

We managed to turn up with 11 players this week and elected to bat first after winning the toss. We then found ourselves 3 wickets down with 41 on the board in the 10th over after some excellent bowling by their opening bowler. A partnership of 63 between D. Attmore and T. Vinnivombe (on his Boxgrove homecoming) steadied the ship, before Attmore was bowled for 18.

A couple of questionable umpiring decisions got rid of our danger men with J. Wakelin falling for an impressive 15 on debut and T. Vinnicombe finally going for a wonderful 82!

Our tail managed to get us up to 160 runs before we lost our final wicket, meaning we new it would be a challenge to defend that score.

Things started relatively well in the field with S. Seville picking up a couple of early wickets, including a spell of 5 overs, 3 maidens, 2 wickets for 8 runs!

However a partnership of almost 100 took the game away from us before a couple of smart catches behind the stumps from D. Attmore gave us a sniff.

Boxgrove kept on it in the field and we were determined to make Slindon work for the runs. In the end, they saw it home with 6 wickets remaining and 7 overs to spare.

Everyone played their part, but a huge shout out to T. Vinnicombe (82 runs), S. Seville (7 overs, 3 maidens, 3-11) and J. Wakelin (15 runs and 4 overs, 1 maiden, 0-12).
