🎓 Course Completed: “Understanding ADHD” – The Open University
I recently completed this 12-hour course as part of my continued growth and development in coaching and mentoring.
Understanding ADHD is essential for creating an environment where every individual can thrive. This course explored ADHD from both the personal and scientific perspectives, covering life with ADHD, the neurobiology behind it, and approaches to management and support.
Each module deepened my awareness of how attention, behaviour, and focus can differ and how, as a coach, I can better adapt, communicate and support each person’s unique way of learning and performing.
Coaching isn’t just about performance; it’s about people.

This testimonial from means a lot, it’s not just because of the kind words, but because it reflects what I value most in coaching: people.
Over the years, I’ve learnt that real coaching goes far beyond the technical. It’s about listening, understanding, and helping someone grow through their own challenges whether in sport and in life.
It’s been a journey built on passion, patience and purpose, and I’m grateful for every athlete, coach, and colleague who’s been part of it.

Welcome to SJS Mentoring! I’m Steve, the founder, and I’m thrilled to connect with you and share a little bit about myself.
As a child, I was an avid reader who found solace and excitement within the pages of books. Alongside my love for literature, I had a deep passion for sports ranging from football, basketball, hockey, athletics and netball. However, despite my hard work and enthusiasm, I wasn’t a natural academic or sportsperson.
After facing disappointment with my A-level grades I embarked on a different path by pursuing an IT apprenticeship in London and the Midlands. Eventually I returned to the South West to work in the field of Information Technology.
It was then I started coaching hockey which ultimately led me to a fulfilling career in teaching, coaching and mentoring at a local private school for the past 18 years. In my various roles, my approach to helping others was built on trust, empathy and respect, creating a safe and supportive environment where teenagers felt comfortable expressing themselves, asking questions and being open to accepting help. My one-to-one sessions offered guidance, encouragement and practical strategies to help pupils overcome obstacles, set meaningful goals and unlock their full potential.
While teaching, I decided to pursue further education through a degree program with The Open University, spanning six years of dedication and hard work. And much of my spare time was spent coaching athletes, some of whom have gone on to represent England and Great Britain.
Throughout my career I’ve had the privilege of offering advice, support, and guidance to countless pupils as they navigated their own challenges. My experience has honed my listening skills and ignited a passion within me to inspire and empower others to strive for excellence in all aspects of their lives.
Teenage years are a time of immense growth, discovery and sometimes uncertainty.
At SJS Mentoring, I’m dedicated to providing personalised mentoring and support to help young adults to navigate this crucial phase of their lives with confidence and clarity. My mission is simple: to support and empower individuals on their unique journeys, whether they’re navigating academic challenges, pursuing personal development or striving towards their career aspirations. I believe in fostering a supporting and encouraging environment where individuals can thrive and unlock their full potential so that they can create a future that they’re excited about.
I look forward to connecting with you and supporting you on your path to success.

My Philosophy
My philosophy resonates deeply with this quote from Dr. Rita Pierson.
'Every child deserves a champion,' she said. While Dr. Pierson spoke about children, I believe this sentiment remains equally vital in adult life.
This is foundation of the services I provide.
