What a summer!

I've been thinking about everything my clients have achieved over the past few months, and I don't think I've stopped to acknowledge quite how much there is to celebrate.

One has been named B&B of the Year.

Another has won Holiday Cottage Accommodation of the Year.

One has been featured in The Sunday Times.

Across the businesses I work with, I've seen higher rates, longer stays, more direct bookings, more of the right guests and stronger profits.

All in a year when we keep hearing how tough the market is.

But here's the thing.

Those aren't the achievements I'm proudest of.

Because underneath the awards, the recognition and the numbers, I've seen something else happening too.

Their businesses are becoming better businesses to run.

One of my clients put it into words beautifully this week.

For five years, she's dreaded August.

It's been the month she reaches the end of exhausted and wondering why on earth she does this.

This year was different.

She wasn't completely full.

But she was more profitably booked.

She had longer stays and fewer changeovers.

She welcomed lovely guests who were exactly the kind of people she wants her business to be for.

She spent time with her children without the usual guilt.

She went away for a week - and the business carried on without her.

And at the end of August, she realised something rather wonderful.

She'd actually enjoyed it.

And although that's her story, it's something I've seen in different ways across so many of the businesses I work with this summer.

More money doesn't have to mean more work.

Higher rates don't have to mean fewer bookings.

Being successful doesn't have to mean being fully booked.

And a busy summer doesn't have to leave you wondering whether you can face another one.

Because success in an accommodation business was never supposed to be about filling the diary, every night, at any cost.

It's about healthy profit.

The right guests.

Bookings that make sense for your business.

More control over your time.

And a business that gives something back financially, practically and personally.

Yes, it's a challenging market.

But a challenging market doesn't mean every accommodation business has to struggle.

The owners I'm watching thrive haven't found a magic marketing trick.

They've done the work.

They've become clearer about the business they want to build.

They've made decisions that haven't always felt comfortable.

They've stopped trying to be for everyone.

They've become more intentional about their pricing, their marketing and the guests they want to attract.

And, little by little, they've built the business behind their hospitality with the same care they've always given the hospitality itself.

I am incredibly proud of them.

Of course I'm delighted by the awards, the press coverage, the bookings and the increased profit.

But I'm even prouder of what all that work is making possible.

They didn't just have a successful summer.

They had a better one.

And that's what all this work has always been about.

People often tell me they'd feel more confident if...
..they had more bookings.
..they could charge higher prices.
..they had a fuller diary.
..they finally felt more secure.

It sounds logical.

But after all these years, I don't think that's how confidence really works.

I've watched owners become more confident long before any of those things happened.

Confidence usually begins with a single decision.

Holding your pricing when, in the past, you would have discounted.

Saying no to a booking that isn't the right fit.

Trusting your positioning instead of trying to appeal to everyone.

Sending an email to previous guests instead of waiting for the booking platforms to do all the work.

None of those decisions feels particularly significant on its own.

But something interesting happens afterwards.

You realise your business didn't fall apart.

In fact...

It often became just a little stronger.

And that makes the next decision easier.

Then the next.

Then the next.

Until one day you look back and realise you're running your business very differently from the way you used to.

Not because one big breakthrough changed everything.

But because lots of small decisions quietly changed you.

That's why I don't think confidence is something you wait for.

I think it's something you build.

One decision at a time.

One of the biggest misconceptions I see is the belief that accommodation businesses naturally become easier over time.

That eventually everything will just fall into place.

The right guests will find you.

The pricing will sort itself out.

The quieter months will somehow become less stressful.

Sometimes that does happen.

But more often, something else happens instead.

Businesses simply become more of what they've already been.

If they're built around reacting...

They become better at reacting.

If they're built around discounting...

They become better at discounting.

If they're built around attracting the wrong guests...

They become better at attracting the wrong guests.

Time doesn't usually change that.

Intentional decisions do.

When I look at the accommodation businesses I admire most, they didn't become strong by accident.

They made small decisions that nudged them in the direction they wanted to go.

A little clearer.

A little stronger.

A little more intentional.

Looking back, those decisions probably didn't feel dramatic at the time.

But together, they completely changed the direction of the business.

Sometimes it's easy to spend so much time asking what you need to do next that you forget to ask a much more important question.

I've been thinking a lot recently about first impressions.

Not the first impression guests get when they arrive...

The one they get long before that.

Long before they've spoken to you.

Long before they've booked.

Long before they've even decided whether your place is right for them.

By then, your business has already been telling them a story.

Your pricing tells a story.

Your photographs tell a story.

Your website tells a story.

Your reviews tell a story.

Your minimum stay tells a story.

Even the emails you send - or don't send - are shaping expectations.

On their own, those things might seem like small details.

But together, they create a feeling.

That's why some accommodation businesses feel so easy to book.

Not because they're the cheapest.

Not because they've got the fanciest website.

But because everything feels consistent.

Guests instinctively understand who the business is for.

The owners know exactly who they're trying to attract.

Nothing feels confused.

Everything points in the same direction.

When those messages become mixed, guests hesitate.

When they reinforce one another, the right guests often recognise they've found exactly what they've been looking for.

Not because they've been persuaded.

Because everything already feels right.

Over the past sixteen years, I've had the privilege of working with accommodation business owners from all over the world.

Different countries.

Different properties.

Different stories.

On the surface, their businesses couldn't look more different.

Some have self-catering businesses.

Others run Bed and Breakfasts.

Some have hotels.

Some have been welcoming guests for decades, while others are only a few years into the journey.

But after all this time, one thing still surprises me.

It's not how different the businesses are.

It's how similar the conversations are.

Underneath the surface, so many owners are carrying exactly the same things.

The same uncertainty.

The same pressure.

The same feeling that they're working incredibly hard, but the business still isn't giving back what they'd hoped it would.

When someone first gets in touch, they nearly always tell me what they think the problem is.

"We need more bookings."

"We need better marketing."

"We need more visibility."

And sometimes those things really do matter.

But they rarely turn out to be the real issue.

Because underneath those symptoms is often something much more fundamental.

Over time, the business has quietly drifted away from what its owners wanted it to become.

It has gradually been shaped by reacting instead of choosing.

By saying yes to everything.

By solving today's problem without always thinking about tomorrow.

The good news is that it doesn't usually need rebuilding from scratch.

It simply needs reconnecting with what mattered in the first place.

A little clearer.

A little stronger.

A little more intentional.

I've come to believe that the best accommodation businesses aren't necessarily the busiest ones.

They're the ones that support the lives of the people who built them.

Picture it a year from now.

The right guests finding you more consistently.

Stays that are longer and calmer.

Fewer changeovers.

Being paid properly - a wage that arrives every month, not just whatever’s left at the end of it.

An evening that’s yours.

The ability to step away for a few days and trust that things will hold.

None of this needs a different property, a better location, or a bigger budget.

It just needs the business behind the hospitality to be built with a little more intention, and a little less reaction.

A question I've been thinking about recently:

Is your accommodation business giving you back what you hoped it would?

Not perfectly.

No business feels perfect all the time.

But underneath the pressure, the responsibility and the constant movement of running it...

Does it genuinely feel like the business is supporting you properly?

Are you paying yourself what you're worth?

Can you switch off without mentally carrying the diary around with you?

Do you feel in control of where the business is heading?

And perhaps the most important question of all:

Are you still enjoying it?

Because over the years I've noticed something.

Many accommodation owners quietly become used to things that were never supposed to feel normal.

Constant pressure.

Inconsistent pay.

Exhaustion.

Always being available.

The feeling that life is slowly narrowing around the business itself.

Not because they've failed.

Usually because they've spent years building the hospitality side while the business itself was left to evolve by circumstance.

The owners who create the biggest changes are rarely the ones with the biggest problems.

They're usually the ones who stop minimising what they already know isn't working.

The point where they stop saying:

"It's not that bad."

And start asking:

"What would this look like if it actually worked properly?"

Because that's where change usually begins.
