Supporting Young People in Equestrian Sport
One of the areas of coaching that has become increasingly important to me over the years is supporting young people within equestrianism.
Horse sport can give young riders and drivers so much, confidence, resilience, responsibility, teamwork, empathy, independence and an enormous sense of identity and belonging. But alongside all of those wonderful things can also come pressure, expectation, comparison, nerves, self-doubt and the challenge of trying to grow up whilst navigating a sport that asks a great deal emotionally as well as physically.
That is why good coaching matters.
For me, coaching young people has never just been about performance. It is about creating an environment where they feel safe to learn, safe to ask questions, safe to make mistakes and safe to develop at their own pace, both as athletes and as people.
Over the years I have worked across a wide range of youth environments, from one-to-one coaching through to supporting teams within competitive settings. I am Youth Mental Health First Aid trained and have significant experience working with communication styles, team dynamics and the emotional demands that often sit quietly underneath performance.
What continues to inspire me is watching young people grow alongside their horses. Seeing confidence develop, watching partnerships strengthen, and helping riders and drivers understand that progress is rarely linear and that thoughtful, horse-first training can still sit comfortably alongside ambition and achievement.
Most importantly, I want young people to feel understood within the sport.
Not judged.
Not pressured to become somebody else.
But supported to develop the skills, confidence and self-awareness that allow them to navigate both horses and life well.
Because horses have an extraordinary ability to shape young people in the very best way.
And good coaching should help protect and nurture that process, not overpower it.

“Watching Kathryn coach, the first thing that becomes apparent is that she genuinely sees both the horse and the person in front of her.
There is a calmness and safety within her coaching environment that allows people to learn properly. Riders and drivers are not simply instructed, they are encouraged to think, reflect and understand. She does not just tell people what to do, she helps them understand why it matters, and that changes the quality of learning completely.
What makes her coaching distinctive is her ability to look at the whole picture. She notices details many others miss, not only in the horse, but in the human too, confidence, timing, breathing, mindset, fatigue, emotion and learning style. There is a clear understanding that performance never exists in isolation from wellbeing.
Her standards are high, but they are grounded in care rather than ego. Welfare and performance are never separated. She is deeply committed to helping horses be understood and treated fairly, whilst also helping people become thoughtful, ethical and reflective equestrians.
She also has a rare ability to make complex concepts feel accessible. People often leave sessions feeling clearer, calmer and more capable, even when they have been challenged. There is a depth to her questioning and observation that encourages genuine understanding rather than dependency.
Perhaps most importantly, Kathryn creates an environment where horses and humans alike are listened to carefully. Combinations often leave not only performing better, but feeling more connected, more aware and more confident in one another.”

One in a Million
I had a conversation today with someone planning something very exciting with their working dog. A one in a million dog. The kind that comes along rarely, if at all, and changes what feels possible.
We found ourselves talking about that feeling.
The moment when you realise that this isn’t ordinary. That this partnership, this opportunity, may not come again in quite the same way.
And it took me straight back, to my own one in a million horse …
Together, we flew. Across disciplines, across expectations, into places I had never quite imagined for myself. We found ourselves in the red ribbons, in amazing moments, in experiences that felt bigger than anything I had ever planned.
And the truth is, I may not have been ready.
But I did it.
Because he carried me there.
With his kindness.
With his honesty.
With a generosity that allowed me to grow alongside him rather than feeling I had to be perfect before I began.
That is what those horses do.
They don’t wait for us to be ready.
They help us become ready.
And now, I find myself blessed to be here again, this time alongside a very special pony. A true one in a million in his own right. Brave, brilliant, powerful, and wonderfully turbo powered when the moment asks for it.
For some time now, he has been a catalyst and an enabler. Not just for me, but for the younger ponies around him. He has quietly taken on the role of teacher, guiding a younger pony alongside him, offering wisdom, confidence, and understanding without ever needing to be asked.
Now a bright energy is beginning to appear in the younger pony. The power and natural forward lift is growing. The brilliance is beginning to show.
And you can feel him learning to organise it. Not rushed. Not forced. Just quietly developing with balance and purpose, supported by the pony beside him who has shown him how to believe in the job.
That is the magic of a pony like my little hero, my one in a million.
He doesn’t just do the job.
He helps others grow into theirs.
Horses like this do not come along often.
They are not replaceable.
They are not interchangeable.
They are once in a lifetime.
And I think, sometimes, we as humans hesitate.
We wait until we feel ready.
Until everything is perfectly in place.
Until we believe we are good enough to match what is in front or underneath us.
But perhaps the truth is this.
When a horse or pony like that comes into your life, the most important thing you can do is say yes.
Step forward.
Take the opportunity.
Allow yourself to be carried, supported, and developed in ways you could not create alone.
Because one day, you will look back and realise it was never about being perfectly prepared.
It was about being present.
And being willing to go with them.
These horses, these animals, these extraordinary partners, they shape us.
They teach us.
They carry us further than we might go on our own.
And they deserve to be recognised for exactly what they are.
Not just talented.
Not just successful.
But deeply, quietly, life-changing.
So if you are lucky enough to have one with you now…
Don’t wait.
Trust them and go with them.
And thank them, every single day, for being exactly who they are.
