An estimated 12 million work days a year are lost due to lower back pain. There can be many causes and the old advice of "lie on your back on a hard surface" is pretty much bo****ks.

For most, movement is essential in fixing the issue. Now, there are certain conditions that will affect pain, sciatica and other protocols are there for those.

Most people sit for exceedingly long amounts of time. Me included! This affects a muscle called the psoas. Here is a link to a quick pain relief guide I made up for the lower back. It's one simple exercise that you can do anywhere; at home, at work, at a concert, in the queue at Gregg's... or Costa... or Starbucks for non-Uk residents.

Just about recovered....

On Saturday at 1pm (yes, when it was really hot!), I set off on the start line of the Cadair Idris Mountain Race.

Having not properly trained for it, I was right to be nervous. Especially with how I struggle with sugar. If I was taking on energy gels or Haribo... I definitely wouldn't make the first cut-off, let alone finish. Most electrolyte supplements (essential in a day like Saturday) also contain some form of sugar.

Fortunately, I was introduced to Purendure. They contain either banana or mango, date syrup and salt. Mainly fructose, which is digested differently to other sugars, and that all important electrolyte that meant i could drink water without going hyponatraemic (potentially fatal... it can be as dangerous as not having enough water).

So... fuel, salts, easy on the digestion and no sticky wrapper in your kit. I'm glad I took it with me.
