It is with sadness that the people of Pobal Parish and the wider community have learned of the death of Reverend Fr John Halton PE, formerly of Moynalty, Co. Cavan, who served as Parish Priest of Pobal Parish, Tempo, for 24 years.
Throughout his years of ministry, Fr Halton devoted himself to the pastoral care of his parishioners, carrying out his priestly duties with commitment and fidelity. He visited the sick, supported families in times of joy and sorrow, and celebrated the sacraments at every stage of life, from Baptism through to Requiem Masses. His presence was a constant feature of parish life for almost a quarter of a century.
Serving during a period of significant change within the Church, Fr Halton embraced the spirit of renewal encouraged by the Second Vatican Council. He established the parish's first Parish Council and worked closely with parishioners in shaping and supporting the life of the faith community, remaining interested in and connected to parish affairs until recent times.
Fr Halton leaves behind a lasting legacy through his stewardship of the Church of the Immaculate Conception, which he renovated to the beautiful standard enjoyed by congregations today. He also undertook important work in the parish graveyard, modernising its facilities while ensuring that valuable historical records were carefully preserved for future generations.
Those who knew Fr Halton will remember a priest who sought to serve his people in the best way he knew how, dedicating his life to the Church and to the community entrusted to his care.
As we give thanks for his long years of service, we remember him in our prayers and extend our sympathy to his family, friends and former parishioners.
As a mark of respect, all club activities are postponed until further notice.
May Fr John Halton rest in the peace of Christ whom he served so faithfully. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam dílis.
