Warning to Drivers: Passing Cyclists Improperly is Illegal

Drivers who overtake cyclists without moving into the opposite lane are breaking the law. If caught passing within the same lane—trying to "squeeze by"—you risk a fixed penalty of £100 and 3 points on your licence.
If contested in court, fines can rise up to £5,000, with 3 to 9 penalty points possible. These cases have been successfully prosecuted.

Close passes don’t just break the law—they cause serious injuries and, tragically, fatalities. With more cyclists using GoPros and bike cameras, evidence is easier than ever to capture.
