White Tiger “Tiger Cubs” Tewkesbury

White Tiger “Tiger Cubs” Tewkesbury A fun Martial Arts syllabus specifically designed for children between 4 - 9 yrs of age. Children learn through play, have fun, and gain life skills.

The Instructor, Mrs Jill Wanklyn is a 4th Degree Black Belt and has been training in Taekwon-Do for approximately 26 years. On the 28th September 2019, Mrs Wanklyn was presented with her 4th Degree Black Belt by one of the few remaining first generation pioneers of Tae Kwon-Do, Grandmaster Kong Young Il and Grandmaster Keith Finch for the promotion of and services to Tae Kwon-Do. The Tiger Cubs programme teaches children to be good citizens and prepares them for life, or at least school. This programme includes lessons in safety and life skills, as well as physical martial arts skills. These skills help the students become well rounded by promoting the child's social, emotional, physical, and intellectual growth. We approach the physical portion of this class as a Martial Arts focused physical education class. The life skills portion of the class focuses on developing mental, social, and emotional skills. All skills and promotions are based on participation and programme completion. Our primary objective is to get the students involved, giving 100% effort, having fun and playing. The focus of the Tiger Cubs class is to develop fundamental basics. Therefore, we teach very few of the martial arts skills that you will see in older children's programmes. Instead, we focus on the skills they need BEFORE entering the older classes. Learn to share, Develop self-esteem, Develop a sense of independence, Take turns, Stimulate curiosity, Develop speech & language, Promote physical strength, Promote co-ordination and stamina, Develop a love of learning. Please find below the list of units covered in our Life Skills and Safety Skills syllabus. 🏅 Star of the Lesson. The moment that makes Tiger Cubs special.

Every session, one child goes home with a certificate. Not for being the best. Not for having the highest kick. For something specific, noticed by the instructor in real time during that session.

It might be:

✅ The child who helped a newer student feel welcome
✅ The child who kept trying a technique that was difficult, without giving up
✅ The child who showed respect to a partner without being asked
✅ The child who listened and followed every instruction first time
✅ The child who simply tried harder than they did last week

What makes Star of the Lesson powerful is its specificity. The instructor names exactly what the child did well, in front of the group, with a certificate to take home. That's not generic praise. That's evidence-based recognition, and it teaches children what effort and character look like. 🐯

For the child, that certificate goes on the fridge. It gets shown to grandparents. It becomes a tangible reminder that they were seen, noticed and celebrated. And that feeling, repeated week after week, is what builds the kind of confidence that carries into everything else. 💛

Parents, you'll see this happen. The pride on a child's face when their name is called is genuinely special, and it's one of the things that makes Tiger Cubs more than just a children's activity.

📅 Saturdays, 11:45am to 12:30pm at Wheatpieces Community Centre, Tewkesbury. £20/month, free first session.

👫 Siblings who train together, stay together.

There's something special about watching brothers and sisters progress through Tiger Cubs side by side. They push each other, support each other, and occasionally compete in the best possible way. It's a dynamic we see regularly, and it's one of the most rewarding things about running a children's programme.

What sibling training builds:

✅ A shared activity that gives them common ground beyond screens and sibling rivalry
✅ Mutual understanding of what each other is working towards
✅ Built-in support, a familiar face on week one makes starting much easier
✅ Healthy competition that drives both children to try harder
✅ A bond that carries from the Dojang into home life

What we've noticed is that siblings often progress at different rates, and that's completely fine. One may earn a belt before the other. One may take to kicking naturally while the other prefers blocking. The key is that both are celebrated individually, never compared. Each child's journey is their own. 🐯

For parents, having two or more children in the same Saturday morning session is also practical. One drop-off, one watch, one shared experience. And with family discounts for three or more, it's genuinely accessible. 💛

If you've been looking for something your children can do together, Tiger Cubs is built for exactly that.

👀 Parents, here’s why we don’t have parents and siblings in the hall during Tiger Cubs training.

When we stopped having parents watch during the pandemic, we discovered something really positive. The children trained with fewer distractions, more space and, importantly, greater independence.

With potentially two adults and siblings accompanying every child, the hall quickly became crowded and noisy. It made it harder for our Tiger Cubs to concentrate, and some children naturally looked towards their parents for reassurance, approval or help when they felt shy or unsure.

By giving children their own training space, we create an environment where they can:

✅ Be themselves, without constantly checking for parental approval
✅ Focus without distractions, including conversations or siblings playing nearby
✅ Develop independence, rather than immediately running to a parent when they feel nervous
✅ Enjoy more space, allowing them to move, practise and learn safely
✅ Build confidence, by tackling challenges and discovering that they can do things for themselves
✅ Fully immerse themselves in training, building focus, resilience and a sense of achievement

This doesn't mean parents aren't important. Quite the opposite. Your encouragement before and after class is a huge part of your child's journey. We simply believe that, during their 45 minutes in the hall, giving them some independence helps them get more from their training.

And don't worry, our instructors are there to support and encourage every child throughout the session. ❤️

If you're looking for an environment where your child can grow in confidence, independence and self-belief, we'd love to welcome them to the Pride. 🐯

🎒 Tiger Cubs and school readiness. The connection is real.

Parents often ask us whether Tiger Cubs helps with school readiness. The answer is yes, and the connection is more direct than you might expect.

When a child starts reception year, they're asked to do several things for the first time: sit in a group, listen to a teacher, follow instructions, wait their turn, interact with peers they don't know, and regulate their own behaviour in a structured environment.

That's exactly what Tiger Cubs teaches, week in and week out. 🐯

The overlap is striking:

✅ Listening to an instructor = listening to a teacher
✅ Following step-by-step instructions = following classroom instructions
✅ Sitting in a line waiting for their turn = carpet time at school
✅ Interacting with other children in a structured setting = playground and group work
✅ Raising their hand or responding when called = classroom participation
✅ Following a routine from warm-up to cool-down = following a school day structure

Children who've been in Tiger Cubs before starting school arrive with these skills already established. They're not learning them for the first time in a classroom of thirty. They're applying skills they've been practising for months in a group of six. 💛

That head start is genuine, and teachers can see the difference. If your child is approaching school age, there's no better preparation than a structured, supportive activity that builds exactly the skills they'll need.

🏅 The first belt. It might be the most important one.

In Tiger Cubs, the first belt a child earns isn't about technique. It's about something far more fundamental, turning up, trying and committing to something new.

When a four-year-old receives their first belt, what they're actually receiving is:

✅ Evidence that they can start something difficult and stick with it
✅ Proof that effort is recognised and rewarded
✅ A tangible symbol of belonging, they're part of the group now
✅ The first experience of earning something through patience, not through wanting it

That first belt stays with them. We've seen children who kept their first belt for years, long after they've moved through the colours, because of what it represents. The beginning. The moment they decided to try. 🐯

What makes this so powerful for young children is that the belt is real. It's not a sticker or a stamp. It's a physical object they wear, that shows they've committed and progressed. For a child, that tangible proof of achievement builds a confidence that words alone can't match. 💛

Every Tiger Cub who walks through our door has that moment waiting for them. All they need to do is start.

⭐ TIGER CUBS STAR OF THE LESSON ⭐🐯🥋

A huge well done to Sophie, who was chosen as our Tiger Cubs Star of the Lesson last Saturday! 🌟👏

Sophie really impressed us throughout the lesson with her fantastic attitude, listening skills and willingness to work hard. 💪😊

During the session, our Tiger Cubs were working on their "evasion” techniques, learning how to move away from an incoming attack while maintaining good control and awareness. 🥋💨

Sophie listened carefully to everything she was being asked to do and worked really hard on putting the techniques into practice. 👂🧠👊 She took the instruction on board, concentrated on what she was doing and kept giving her best throughout the session.

But perhaps one of the best things about Sophie’s training was that she smiled throughout! 😃🐯

That combination of effort, concentration and enjoyment is fantastic to see. Martial arts should challenge our children, help them develop new skills and build confidence, but it should also be fun! ⭐

Sophie showed us that she can work hard, listen to her instructors and still enjoy every minute of her training. That is exactly the kind of attitude we love to see in our Tiger Cubs. 🥋❤️

🌟 Well done, Sophie! 🌟

Keep smiling, keep listening and keep working hard. Your confidence and skills will continue to grow with every lesson! 🐯💪🥋

🐯 Every Tiger Cub earns their moment.

One of the things that makes our programme special is how we recognise effort. We don't just wait for belt gradings to celebrate progress. We build recognition into every single session, because for a child aged four and up, a small win today matters more than a belt six months from now.

Here's how recognition works in Tiger Cubs:

✅ Star of the Lesson certificates for effort, attitude and improvement
✅ Student of the Month for consistent dedication over time
✅ Verbal praise that's specific, not generic "well done" but "that kick was much straighter today"
✅ End-of-year awards that bring the whole group together

Why this matters so much at this age: children build confidence through evidence. When they hear exactly what they did well, they understand what effort looks like, and they want to repeat it. Generic praise doesn't teach that. Specific recognition does. 💛

The difference it makes is visible. We watch children who started shy and quiet gradually stand taller, speak up and take pride in what they're achieving. That transformation, more than any belt, is the real measure of what Tiger Cubs does. 🦁

Parents, you'll see this happen in real time. Every recognition moment is shared, celebrated and remembered.

🦁 "Is my child too young to start martial arts?"

It's one of the most common questions we hear from parents, and it's a genuinely good one. The honest answer is that there's no single magic age, but for most children, four is a brilliant time to begin.

At four, a child is developing the coordination, listening skills and social awareness that martial arts gently builds on. They're not too young to learn focus, respect and basic movement. They're at exactly the right age to start forming habits that will serve them for years. 🐯

What we look for in a ready-to-start Tiger Cub:

✅ Able to follow simple two-step instructions
✅ Comfortable in a group setting, even if shy at first
✅ Willing to try new things with gentle encouragement
✅ Able to take themselves to the toilet
✅ No prior experience needed, genuinely none

Some children settle immediately. Others take a few weeks to find their feet. Both are completely normal, and both are welcomed with the same patience. That's the whole point of a specialist children's programme, it meets each child where they are. 💛

If you've been wondering whether your little one is ready, the simplest way to find out is to bring them along. The first session is free and you'll know pretty quickly whether it's the right fit.

💛 Why we keep Tiger Cubs classes small. Because your child deserves to be seen.

A common question from parents is about class size. "How many children in a session?" It's a genuinely important question, and the answer tells you a lot about how an academy operates.

At White Tiger, we maintain a student-to-instructor ratio of approximately 6:1 in our Tiger Cubs sessions. That's deliberate. Here's why it matters:

✅ Every child gets individual attention in every session
✅ Instructors can spot when a child is struggling and adjust immediately
✅ Technique is corrected properly, not waved past in a large group
️ Quieter children aren't lost in the crowd
️ Safety is maintained with proper supervision at all times

Large classes might look impressive from the outside. But for children aged 4 and up, being one of thirty means being overlooked. Being one of a group of six means being known, guided and genuinely developed. 🐯

That's the standard we hold. It's why we have assistant instructors and group leaders in the room, not just one person trying to manage a crowd. And it's one of the reasons our Tiger Cubs thrive, progress and stay with us. 💛

If you're comparing martial arts schools for your child, ask about ratios. The answer matters more than you might expect.

🐯 From Tiger Cubs to Taekwon-Do. A pathway that works.

One of the things we're most proud of is how many of our Tiger Cubs make the transition into the main Taekwon-Do programme. It's not accidental. It's built into the design of both programmes, so that when a child is ready, the move feels natural rather than daunting.

Here's how the pathway works:

✅ Tiger Cubs builds the foundations, focus, listening, basic movement and Dojang culture
✅ Children transition based on age and readiness, not belt level
✅ The move is gradual, with familiar instructors and a familiar environment
✅ New students in the main programme are welcomed and supported by seniors
✅ The values and expectations carry straight across, so nothing feels completely new

To date, fifteen Tiger Cubs have made this transition successfully. They arrive in the main programme with a head start that's genuinely hard to overstate. They know the etiquette. They understand the structure. They're comfortable in the Dojang. All they need to learn is the next layer of technique. 🥋

That continuity is a big part of why our retention is strong. Children aren't dropped into a completely new environment at a key transition point. They're guided through it, with people they know and trust. 💛

If you're starting your little one in Tiger Cubs, you're not just signing up for a children's activity. You're starting them on a pathway that can carry them all the way to Black Belt and beyond.
