⚽️U15 Clarets – Match Report⚽️
Walsham-le-Willows 4–0 Thetford Town U15 Clarets
The Thetford Town U15 Clarets were back on the road today as they travelled away to face Walsham-le-Willows in what was always going to be a challenging fixture.
Walsham came into the game with plenty of confidence after winning the league last season, while Town also had to contend with a number of players unavailable through injury. To add to the challenge, regular goalkeeper Jack was unavailable, meaning Freddie D stepped up and took on the gloves, playing in an unfamiliar position.
The Clarets knew they would have to work hard from the first whistle, and Walsham started brightly. The hosts took an early lead after a dangerous run down the left wing opened up an opportunity for their player to get a shot away. He struck it cleanly, finding the top corner with an excellent finish to make it 1–0.
Town tried to settle into the game and continued to look to play football in the right way, moving the ball and working hard despite the difficult circumstances. Walsham continued to put pressure on and managed to add a second goal before the interval.
At half-time, Town found themselves 2–0 down, but there was no lack of effort or determination from the Clarets. The message was to keep going, compete for every ball and continue trying to play our football.
The second half saw Thetford come out fighting. The players showed plenty of character and continued to look for ways back into the game. Town created some good opportunities and got themselves into promising positions, but unfortunately the finishing touch was missing when it mattered.
Walsham eventually added two further goals to make it 4–0, but the scoreline doesn’t take away from the effort shown by the Clarets, particularly given the players missing and Freddie stepping in to play out of position in goal.
It simply wasn’t Town’s day. Football can be like that sometimes — chances don’t go in, things don’t quite fall your way, and eventually you have to accept the result and move forward.
After making such a positive start to the season with two excellent victories on the road, the winning run was always going to come to an end at some point. What matters now is how the team responds.
There were still plenty of positives to take from today’s performance, particularly the attitude of the players, their willingness to keep battling and their commitment to playing football the right way right until the final whistle.
A big well done to Freddie D for stepping up and taking on the goalkeeper role, and credit to every player who put in a shift today.
