This year’s Margaret Borley Memorial Cup did not disappoint.
Three teams locked horns on Sunday 6th September for a fun, but also competitive, round robin tournament.
Game 1
Buccaneers 9-9 Hurricanes
The Buccaneers Travel Team (made up mainly of youth players) took on the host team, Hildenborough Hurricanes, in a back & forth affair & at the buzzer both teams had to settle for a draw in a highly entertaining game.
Game 2
Buccaneers 6-19 Bobcats
Bobcats Alumni (which wasn’t made up mainly of youth players🤪) took the field & for some, dusting off their glove & cleats for the first time since last year’s game. The Cats bats exploded throughout the game & for the youthful Bucs it was a lesson from the experienced Alumni team.
Game 3
Bobcats 17-6 Hurricanes
The Canes needed to win this game to be crowned champs, unfortunately it didn’t quite work out for them with the dominant Bobcats Alumni tacking runs at will using stealth & cunning.
So, the Bobcats Alumni were crowned Champions of the 2026 Margaret Borley Memorial Cup & we think it’s fair to say Margaret would have loved the fact that a very large proportion of players on the day were aged 11-16yrs.
This year experience conquered youthful exuberance but for how much longer time will tell & we look forward to the 2027 edition.
