A little bit of Cary Park history was made on Wednesday night when 16 adult members played a mini-tournament across four floodlit courts - to mark the opening of the Court Four floodlights.
Partners and opponents were drawn out of a hat for three 30-minute matches and the player with the most games won over the 90 minutes won a trophy. That honour went to Harry Stimpson who won 21 games. Second place went to Peter Coleby with 20.
Cary Park's first two courts were floodlit around about 2011, followed by Court Three in 2020. The new court offers enough borrowed light to be used by juniors in after-school sessions, but not really enough for a proper match. Along with temporary lights bought two years ago by Tracy and Kendal, it is now possible for the juniors to use all six courts on a winter's evening, should that become necessary.
The new court cost almost £30,000 with Andy Pelling raising £15,000 in grants. It is now hoped that the members can raise the rest over the next couple of years so the net cost will be zero. Fund raising events should resume over Christmas and into the new year.
Tournament organiser Paul said: 'We should all be very grateful to our far-sighted committee in putting their whole-hearted support into this project.
'With many juniors now playing tournament matches - some of them for Devon - and three county players among our adults, this club is really going places.'

Once again our very own Julie Lee is putting Cary Park Tennis Club on the map by winning the Devon Closed Championship Over 60s Ladies Doubles today. Two weeks ago, Julie won the Dartmouth Open with Claire Palmer, but she couldn't play with Claire today as she was too young! Julie teamed up with Pam Gregory from Ivybridge to beat Amanda Goodison ( County Captain) and Jinny Staply 6-2, 7-5. Julie said 'It was a pretty straightforward first set, but they changed to more defensive tactics in the second and made it harder for us. But we overcame our temporary loss of focus to get over the line'.

CARY PARK’S GOLDEN GIRLS WIN THE DARTMOUTH OPEN AT FIRST TIME OF ASKING!

Huge congratulations to Claire Palmer and Julie Lee who took the prestigious Dartmouth Open Over 45 Ladies Doubles title yesterday – in their first ever senior competition.

The tournament has just been raised from Level Four to Level Three meaning it attracts top talent from all over the county.

Claire and Julie, who have only just started playing together, beat Fiona Somerville of Sidmouth A and Holly Wood of David Lloyd, Exeter 4-6, 6-4, 10-7 to win the trophy which is being presented today.

Starting as favourites, the younger pair began strongly and took the first set 6-4 against a somewhat nervy Claire and Julie.

But the Cary Park twosome dug deep to pull back the second set by the same score and then smash the tie break 10-7 after an early break.

Julie said: ‘We were so nervous when the match started; it was a new experience for both of us against a more experienced pair.

‘But I was very proud that we didn’t let our heads go down. We defended brilliantly against our more aggressive opponents, and that’s what kept us in it.

‘We just kept at it, and gradually they started to make more mistakes. We decided we had to be more offensive-minded and we got stronger and stronger’

Claire said: ‘At one stage, we were very nervous and they were pushing us back, but we had tremendous support from Linda and Carol from Cary Park and a stack of other friends. And every time we started to falter, we could hear them shouting encouragement. I think that’s what got us through it.’

Both Julie and Claire have played for Devon this season and are among three lady county players at Cary Park (not including Kendal, of course) along with Jane McGovern who plays for Somerset.

Claire said: ‘But I think she’s going to switch to Devon next year, so we have a very strong contingent at Cary Park’. Julie added: ‘We have a lot of other very good ladies and it means that competition is very strong at Cary Park’.

Julie said: ‘What was lovely was that we were wearing matching outfits and everyone was saying how that made us stand out. So it was a good job we won!’

How fantastic is this … well done to our super heroes! Go smash ‘em!!

🎾 Huge congratulations to three of the Bradley Brown Coaching team who have been selected to represent the Devon Men’s and Ladies County teams! 👏

This is a fantastic achievement and a real testament to the standard of our coaching team.

We’re incredibly proud to have coaches competing at county level, and it’s something that benefits everyone they work with at Cary Park Tennis Club and Bradley Brown Coaching.

Wishing all three the very best of luck for the week ahead. Go Devon! 💙🎾
