This memory came up today

A pic from 9 years ago, at 28 years old when I was training a lot and in pretty good condition
&
A vid from Today at 37,

Happy I can still get this bar handstand

In between this time I’ve had a 2 year chronic lower back injury, that stopped me lifting a simple 12kg box of tiles and stopped me doing building work completely for years.

It’s been a long road and nearly fully fixed but one things for certain

I think 37 year old me can absolutely kick my 28 year old ass in all things. That’s my goal to be better than I was for as long as I can

Not quite able to beat 20 year old me yet but I have those figures to work towards and I will beat them

I am my only and most fierce opponent

Age is inevitable and is coming for us all but it can mean little or it can be the excuse

The tide of life and death shifting with every decision or indecision

Every workout done and missed

Every injury that you keep or you overcome

Everything we decide to eat, drink, smoke

Keeping the equation of life net positive is my goal

“Front towards enemy”

Fitting that it faces me all the time

We are our own worst enemies

Keep the eternal fight between life and death flowing and in your favour

Nature has designed us to bear great suffering, designed to absorb physical tortures and mental pressure.

Every trial that comes for the human beast, they have already faced and overcome, millennia of getting 1% better at dealing with adversity.

And here we are. Void of the threats of fighting for survival daily. We sit and regress. The potential to slowly become 1% worse each time we sit in the comfort of the modern world.

Each degree we regress makes us unable to bear the world in some way. Ruins the awesome design of the ultimate beast.

Keep the pressure on the body and mind and force the changes necessary to survive. Pass the gifts down generations as we have received from the ancestors.

Endure. Adapt. Overcome.

As they have always done

Weighted run 18kg (he walked for 1km with his mums vest then took off for the run) joints and all that etc

We realised something tonight, after he was basically waiting for me the whole run and never out of breath.

The kids have never ran on flat ground 😂 or me and Zo for last 6 years that I can remember.

It’s always been the forest and mountain. So this was a bit different for him and weird to run steady and not feel tired in the slightest.

So we’ll have to up the game for him and see what happens when we push on flat ground.

Maybe time to try the good old 1.5mile test🤔

I love this part of the book (12 rules for life)

When you try to implement huge changes it can set you up to fail and here we’ll find ourselves in an eternal cycle of always wanting to DO but not doing.

This approach is absolutely sound advice

Aim smaller

Imagine instead of trying to dive into 3-5 workouts a week, you just aim for one, or even lesser, aim for a 5 minute walk in the morning, you’ll find those first terrifying steps will turn quickly into progress.

Imagine instead of a crash diet, or jumping onto some method of eating like keto or intermittent fasting, meticulous calorie counting, banning ALL enjoyment of foods etc

That you simply started with a little thing like no sugar in your coffee, or just trying to reduce a portion size a little, something that matches your routine instead of a huge drastic change.

or not even changing a thing at all and writing down a simple 3 day diary of what you’ve eaten, it’ll become hugely apparent what the problems are and whether you can/ would fix them.

I’ll tel you now. One small tiny victory, one seemingly meaningless “good job” for yourself will cascade into greater things.

Aim small, miss small

Here’s The section from Jordan Peterson’s book that got me really thinking today-

“Pay attention. Focus on your surroundings, physical and psychological. Notice something that bothers you, that concerns you, that will not let you be, which you could fix, that you would fix. You can find such somethings by asking yourself (as if you genuinely want to know) three questions: “What is it that is bothering me?” “Is that something I could fix?” and “Would I actually be willing to fix it?” If you find that the answer is “no,” to any or all of the questions, then look elsewhere. Aim lower. Search until you find something that bothers you, that you could fix, that you would fix, and then fix it. That might be enough for the day.”

💥 YOU HAVE 119 HOURS💥

You know what’s better than training 3 x a week?

You know what’s better than training 5 x a week?

That’s a good bit of training right, what we’d like to strive for?

What’s better?

ZERO training and simply eating well and being conscious of what you’re stuffing in your face.

It is! And here’s why.

3-5 sessions a week = 3-5 hours

The rest of your week has 114 hours in after taking 7hrs sleep a night away.

💥 114 HOURS 💥

You simply can NOT expect to ignore 114 hours and expect 3-5 to offset that.

It’s far too little effort, to offset completely ignoring the events of those 114 hours

That’s diet & activity too( or N.E.A.T)

Yes training in addition is far better again

But the thought that;

“I’ll start training soon”
Or
“I missed a session so no point watching diet”
Or
“I’ve done a workout so I deserve cake”

Etc…etc…

Is not reality.

You have ~ 114 hours, plus training to actually make a real difference.

Putting one wheel on your car isn’t going to get you nowhere.

Don’t ignore those daily commitments to your health

They are what will add up to BIG changes. Not just those handful of workouts.

Are people really willing to give up the s**t that’s making them sick?

F1 Cars, Rally Cars, Off road 4x4s,
Fighter jets, Stealth planes, Jumbo Jets,
Speed boats, Yachts, Aircraft Carriers

All of these high performance machines cost billions to make them specific to their peak performance. They cannot really cross over into each others disciplines and still be effective.

However,

Your Body, you're body is a machine that can, it can perform with outstanding efficiency in any discipline to direct it to. It can move fast and efficiently on tarmac, on grass, on mountains bearing great loads, it is the ultimate off road machine.

It can make sudden sharp movement at speed like the fighter jet, be stealthy, it can swim on the surface and underwater. It can be gentle and soft, perform movement with care yet it is capable of great physical power and destruction.

Capable of weakness and vulnerability yet also strength and mental fortitude beyond belief.

It can be nurtured and appreciated and it will grow strong and well, yet it can be abused with drugs, alcohol, smoking, food, poor maintenance and surprisingly against the odds, it will adapt and continue working, not as efficiently but it will endure great hardship and keep you alive. There's not a machine on the planet that can absorb as much mistreatment as the human body can and still function.

It truly is a remarkable machine, what are you doing to explore and appreciate yours. We should see the beauty and strength we are capable of daily.

Don't leave your sports car in the garage, dont leave the fighter jet in the hangar, let them do what they were built to do or they will rust and fall apart over time.
