From Underdogs to Champions

At the beginning of this journey, I don’t think many people would have looked at us and said, “There are the champions.”

We were the underdogs. A group of women who simply loved playing cricket, loved being part of a team and, most importantly, loved doing it together.

But somewhere along the way, something changed.

We started believing.

We believed in ourselves, but even more importantly, we believed in each other.

Every training session, every difficult game, every mistake, every ridiculous moment, every bit of encouragement and every time one of us said “come on, we can do this” brought us a little closer to where we are today.

League Champions 2026.

And saying those words still feels pretty special.

Because this title isn’t just about the matches we won. It’s about how far we’ve come.

Year after year, our coaches have pushed us to become better players. They’ve given us their time, patience, knowledge and encouragement — even on the days when I’m sure we’ve tested every last ounce of that patience! They saw potential in us and kept believing in what this team could become.

To our coaches — thank you. This achievement belongs to you too.

We also know that no team succeeds alone.

Behind us is a community of people who have supported us, encouraged us, turned up for us and celebrated every little step forward. There are people working quietly behind the scenes who probably don’t realise just how important their contribution has been.

To the organisations that have supported and invested in us, thank you for believing that women’s cricket is worth investing in. Your support has given us opportunities, equipment and experiences that have helped this team grow.

And to our families, friends, supporters and everyone within our community who has stood behind us — thank you. Every message, every cheer from the sidelines and every bit of encouragement has mattered.

But finally, I want to say something about us.

What makes this team special isn’t a league table or a trophy.

It’s the friendships.

It’s the laughter.

It’s taking the mickey out of each other, picking each other up when things haven’t gone well, celebrating each other’s successes and knowing that when we walk onto that field, nobody stands there alone.

We have different personalities, different strengths and different reasons for playing — but somehow, when we come together, we work.

We started as the underdogs.

We worked.

We learned.

We laughed — a lot.

We got better.

And somewhere along the way, those underdogs became the team to beat.

So when we look at that trophy, I hope we don’t just see League Champions 2026.

I hope we see every training session, every person who believed in us, every friendship we’ve made, every obstacle we’ve overcome and every memory we’ve created together.

Because trophies will eventually gather dust.

But we’ll never forget the year we proved to ourselves what we were capable of.

From underdogs…

Monday night friendly🏏

Tredegar v Ebbw Vale
Tredegar made a trip to neighbours Ebbw vale for a friendly game.
Tredegar’s interim captain G won the toss and immediately inserted Ebbw vale.
Some tight bowling in the first pair with wickets from Gail and Lara saw Tredegar take control.
Ebbw then sent out the big guns with Sarah hitting the ball hard but some fine spin by tredegars veteran Sara Taylor putting the batters in serious trouble some fine catching by Lucy and the skipper saw Taylor take a few along with Abbie bowling serious also getting 2 in an over. Wickets kept tumbling and catches kept being held with wickets coming for Boyle and Sara E then Elise.

Ebbw vale 102/12 with a final score of 42.
Tredegar went out with the ever reliable opening bats Lucy and Elise who took the game away in the first 4 overs getting 44 runs for 0 wickets with Lucy hitting big sixes and finishing with 34 runs.
Some good defensive batting and running between the wickets for pairs Sara E and Abbie and G and Nadette saw them pairs not conceded any wickets. The pair of vets Sara T and Susan B blasted a few runs but a few memory loses saw Taylor lose 2 wickets.
Tredegar finished 116/2 and a final score of 106 seeing Tredegar win by 64 runs.

Tredegar v Creigiau🏏

Back to league action this Sunday. Tredegar won the toss and elected to bowl first.
Early wides didn’t help Tredegar as Creigau started to build a score.
Some excellent bowling by G and Michelle then got tredegar back in the mix. Some tidy overs from nadette and Elise kept the game tight. Creigau hit a few boundaries but again wickets from G and Michelle and some excellent catches by Lucy including a one handed stunner. Creigau finished with 269.
Tredegars chase didn’t start well with the mature opening partnership of sara t and Susan losing 2 wickets, a few boundaries from Taylor made up for the losses.
G and Katie then built a solid partnership with the force hitting a few runs and the 2 seen off the best Creigau bowlers.
A few changes in the order saw the big guns of Elise and Lucy come to wicket some elegant shots by Lucy and some well nurdled runs by Elise put Tredegar within 14 of the game.
The final pair of Michelle and nadette had some tough bowling to face and a lost wicket saw Tredegar fall just 3 runs short.
Today’s player of the match went to G👏

Friday night friendly🏏
Tredegar v Blaina

A Friday night friendly saw Tredegar field a mixture of youth and more mature ladies.
Elected to field Tredegars bowlers thought they were casting fishing rods not bowling cricket balls! Lots of wides and no balls didn’t help then situation as blaina got off to a flyer.
Some good fielding helped the bowlers and a debut from Lara Jayne who bowled well and took her first wicket for the club started to tighten it up a touch. Further wickets from Michelle, Sara T and 2 from Elise with some well excellent catches by Lucy saw the hosts post 275.
In reply Tredegar started with the 2 Sara’s (or 2 Ronnie’s) after a school boy error both got going and hit some decent shots getting 34 for the first pair.
In come the newbie Lara was who partnered up with Abbie some boundaries later and Lara’s debut ended in success.
A mixture youth and experience saw Michelle and Chloe come to crease some solid running between the wickets and some well timed 4s saw the game safe before the last pair.
In come Lucy and Elise to steer the ship home this one wasn’t a steer as Lucy opened up hitting 4s and 6s to all part of the ground.
Tredegar ended 329.

Tredegar v Ponthir x2

A double headed game today, with a damp start and Tredegar winning the toss in the first game they inserted Ponthir.
Tredegar bowlers made a nervous start with Lucy Griffths after last week’s brutal bowling in training getting the yips!
After this the bowlers then got their act together and bowled some excellent stuff taking 7 wickets in total. Some excellent leadership bowling by Michelle Jones saw her take 3 wickets for next to nothing, supported really well by the old experience of Sara Taylor who took 2/14 off 3 overs.
Some tight bowling by Elise and Abbie who took a wicket a piece leaving the run chance to 255.
A solid opening start with 32 added for one wicket from Lucy and Elise got the innings of to a start, some decent bowling from Ponthir really tightened the reigns saw us go into the last overs needing 17 to win this seemed at ease as Michelle and Janet took to the crease, all seemed well until a late wicket put us behind the game, along come the bull with a beautiful shot through mid wicket and a few nurdles and a solid defence saw Tredegar win by 1 run.

Game 2 a lost toss saw Tredegar inserted, after a decent start by Lucy the bowling went up a notch and Tredegar batters losing a few quick wickets put us up against it, not even a defiant knock from the bull and Michelle could put a big score on the board 254 to defend.
Bowling started with a bang, early wickets from Michelle gave us hope until a middle order batting destruction saw us behind the rate, even a over spin from the Boyle which nearly resulted in a wicket didn’t help.
The last few overs and another wicket from Michelle still wasn’t enough to stop a 12 run defeat.
Today’s player of the match was Michelle jones who bowled superbly all game👏
