I see my job as a Pilates teacher as helping you to learn how to move your spine with greater ease through the Pilates exercises. And, yes, that includes your deep stomach muscles - or core - which supports your back but toning your tummy is not the whole story. We will also work on the rest of you, including your posture, shoulders and hips.
The aim of the Friday class is to start your weekend off with a good stretch and strengthen session. And take some time out for yourself to breathe.

I haven’t been on here for a while, as since I moved down from London a few years ago I’ve been mainly working at the lovely Studio One Pilates practice in The Pantiles.
However, I thought I’d put it out there that I am setting up a new Pilates mat work class of my own after Easter in the big upstairs room at St Peters Church on Bayhall Road, Tunbridge Wells, TN2 4UX. Friday mornings at 9.30.
It’ll be a five-week block of classes starting on Friday 26 April, running until Friday 24 May (and will cost £60 for five consecutive sessions). I will then start teaching a new block when the schools go back in June.

If anyone is looking to supplement their Pilates classes with an online workout www.pilatesanytime.com is well worth a look. And I can highly recommend having a look at my old colleague and friend Julie Driver's classes. Not only is she our own home-grown talent (Pilatesanytime is a US site) she also won the 2014 Next Pilates Anytime Instructor Competition!

I've just attended a great lecture by physiotherapist Dr Ruth Jones on Male and Female Pelvic Pain.
Really interesting discussion on the links between back pain and pelvic floor dysfunction and how back pain means the pelvic floor and breathing muscles will be working differently. So in theory if we can get rid of back pain in pregnancy by moving well in our Pilates classes we are helping our pelvic floors too.
Great tips for overactive pelvic floors too, ie needing to pass urine more than every couple of hours or when moving from sitting to standing. Try contracting your pelvic floor just before standing up and the simple exercise of moving from foot to foot rising up and down on your tiptoes.
Lots of other really interesting information on her research with

Dr Ruth Jones also refers to the groundbreaking work of physiotherapist Maeve Whelan and how crucial it is to be able to release the pelvic floor before strengthening it. Check out the Sniff, Flop and Drop technique on Maeve Whelan's website.

Feeling very inspired after completing some amazing workshops with the totally awesome Elizabeth Larkham, who is currently over from the US. This lady really knows about how to get people moving well. It's always great to be taught by someone educated by the first generation of Pilates teachers but I love the way Elizabeth also draws on her work as a Feldenkrais® practitioner and Gyrotonic® instructor to share movements that work with getting the body's fascia gliding well, as well as the muscles and bones moving in the best way they can. If you're interested in trying one of her classes yourself you can find some of her classes on www.pilatesanytime.com.
