The 12th proves our course can challenge without relying on bunkers or distance.

An island fairway surrounded by danger on all sides forces long hitters to leave the driver in the bag, making this par 4 play considerably longer than the scorecard indicates, and without any room for error.

For men, there is also the option of pushing the tee up and creating a brilliant risk and reward hole.

Well done Oscar! πŸ‘ πŸ‘ πŸ‘

Tollit Takes U16 Honours at Sweetwoods

Oscar Tollit Piltdown Golf Club produced an excellent round to take top spot in the Sussex U16s Championship on 14th August at Sweetwoods Golf Club finishing at two over par on a very hot day.

With temperatures remaining high throughout the afternoon, conditions provided an additional challenge for the young players, but there was some excellent golf at the top of the leaderboard.

Tollit led the way at +2, finishing two shots ahead of Ezra Hartland Cooden Beach Golf Club on +4. Sophie Jones took third place at +6.

George McCallum, Lucas Butler, Benjamin Champness, Kade Fullarton and Amelia McGinty shared fourth place, all finishing at +7, while Lewis Day, Beau Lyons and Oliver Hart were a further shot back at +8.

With a later start to help manage the hot conditions, it was a long day for players and officials alike, with the final presentation eventually taking place in the dark!

A big thank you goes to Ray Smith for starting the players and to Cody Maynard-Grice, James and Karen Parks for their help throughout the day with administration, ball spotting and, particularly importantly in the heat, keeping the juniors supplied with cold drinks.

Our thanks also go to Sweetwoods Golf Club for hosting the event and looking after everyone throughout the day.

Congratulations to Oscar on taking the U16 honours, and well done to all of the juniors who competed in challenging conditions.

Martlets Trophy

The U16 event also formed the final round of the Martlets Trophy, decided on the aggregate scores from the Boys U18 Championship and the U16 event.

Oscar Tollit completed an impressive few days of county golf to take the Martlets Trophy with a three-round aggregate of 233, finishing two shots ahead of Benjamin Champness on 235.

Kade Fullarton finished third on 237, with Edward Warlow fourth on 239 and Coby Hall completing the top five on 240.

Congratulations to Oscar on securing the Martlets Trophy and to all of the players who competed across both events.

At the beginning of July, former Tour professional Warren Bennett took on Piltdown in a very interesting challenge, starting 4 down against the course and trying to fight his way back.

There’s some seriously good golf on show, some superb drone footage of the course, and excellent support from Trevor the dog on the bag.

So, who comes out on top: Warren or Piltdown?

Have a watch and find out!

Many congratulations to Aileen Greenfield, who won the Ladies’ Championship and the Duncan Cup for the second year running.

Rounds of 75 and 72 gave Aileen a three over par total and another thoroughly deserved victory. She may not have quite threatened her own course record of five under par, but it was still an excellent performance over two rounds.

Fourteen-year-old Sophie pushed her all the way with rounds of 75 and 79, a superb effort and surely a sign of plenty more to come!

There was also some excellent scoring in the nett competition, with Hilary Humphry-Baker taking first place after rounds of 65 and 70 and Clare Strong finishing runner-up with 73 and 69.

Well played to everyone, and congratulations again to Aileen on another outstanding performance πŸ†

Congratulations to Peter Barrett, who produced an amazing performance to win both the Bulteel Bowl and the Mann Scratch Cup and become our 2026 Club Champion. And as though winning both trophies was not enough, Peter also recorded a hole-in-one at the 7th during his second round!

In very difficult, windy conditions on a fast and fiery course, Peter held off the challenge of several of our very talented younger players. While they may have had youth and power on their side, Peter used all his experience and knowledge of Piltdown to great effect, keeping the ball in play and managing his way around the course superbly.

A thoroughly deserved victory and a fine example of how good course management can count for an awful lot.

Congratulations again!
