Hi, I'm Catrina Lowri, founder of Neuroteachers. I'm a neurodivergent teacher with dyslexia and bipolar condition. I have over 20 years experience as SENCO and special needs teacher. At Neuroteachers, we believe that every brain is unique. We work with schools, nurseries, colleges, parents and businesses to support inclusion for autistic and neurodivergent people. We offer mentoring, coaching, training and events both online and in person. We are based in Cardiff but work throughout the UK and world wide.

EBSA part 25: Parents here are 3 common techniques that will not help your neurodivergent child to get back into school. When teachers suggest these they obviously have your child’s best interests at heart and want to help. So here is one idea that might help. Attendance ladder’s are a technique I’ve seen schools use with some success. It’s about giving autonomy back to the child, which often be all it takes to lower anxiety. If you’d like to know more about this and other key techniques to help plan your neurodivergent child’s reintegration into school after persistent absence, why not join my online workshop?

I don’t like banter.
I don’t get it.
It confuses me.
I don’t find it funny, especially when it’s at someone else’s expense.
It’s befuddling at best and distasteful at worse.

Also, when banter is one way, it’s just an excuse for bullying.
Saying something mean and then saying ā€œjust messing!ā€ Or ā€œonly joking!ā€ doesn’t make it ok.

If someone is offended by your joke at their expense, apologise, back away or find another ladder to climb down.

Don’t double down and make it their fault.

Yesterday I got told I have ā€œmental problems ā€œ because I didn’t find a man’s weak attempt at banter funny.

I do have mental problems. My mental problems consist of
having to live around neurotypical people who think making poor joke at other people’s expense is humorous.

And yes, I know it not all neurotypicals but always a neurotypical.
Not all men but always a man. In this case it was a neurotypical man.

Neurodivergent friends; how do you feel about banter?
Neurotypical friends; how would you react if someone says they didn’t like banter right after you had done a banter?
Is the correct response to call the other person mental?

Share your thoughts šŸ’.

Disclaimer: not understanding banter is NOT in the diagnostic criteria for any ND condition.

This observation was bought to you by ā€œno facts just vibesā€.

Remember when I said Stop āœ‹ using bribery and start using PINCH to motivate your ADHD child?

Here’s an explanation using the fabulous visuals kindly leant to me by .au . Definitely give them a follow if you like clear accessible visuals about neurodivergence, the sensory system and sensory regulation.

Anyway, to give him credit, the original creator here, .adhd__ is trying to explain front loading using a simple visual but it got lost as he used sweet and the whole discussion became one around bribery and sweets ( which you should know I’m very against!)

The video is worth a watch if you want to understand the concept of front loading and you see the sweets as a metaphor and use PINCH and the ideas from our lovely Australian friends instead of the sweets šŸ¬. But please DON’T bribe your ADHD children with sweets.

I digress… have you tried a PINCH of dopamine with an ADHD child? Share your thoughts šŸ’

Also if you’d like a video on front loading that does not involve bribing your ADHD child with sweets or Money šŸ’° 😮! Just comment below ā¬‡ļø

EBSA part 23: How does the environment affect attendance? All behaviour happens because;
- we have a sensory experience
- you have a physiological reaction which leads to an emotion
- then you act

By the time we see the behaviour, we may have entirely missed the cause.

I’m a new survey by environmental factors were a key issue when it came to Emotionally Based School Avoidance which is why I’ve updated my online workshop to talk about this in more details. If you are interested in finding out more, comment EBSA or follow the link below to get your ticket now.

EBSA part 35: Attendance awards are unintentionally ableist.

They are meant as a carrot to reward children who came in every day. They end up othering and marginalising children with complex medical needs, neurodivergent children who experience burn out or overload and children who may need a therapeutic intervention off site.

I know it’s meant to be a lovely celebration of a few fit and healthy children but, before you print out those certificates, consider what is means to the others in the audience.

And… don’t even get me started on attendance awards for teachers and support staff!

The number one indicator of a school with a good attendance figures is creating a sense of belonging and community where everyone feels part of the community. Which why I talk about this in more detail in my online workshop
Emotionally Based School Avoidance.

I’m neurodivergent and I don’t drink but it’s been a hard week;

- just getting over COVID
- tried to work from home whilst having work done in the house
-had a huge meltdown yesterday so had a major emotional hangover today.

My husband bought me this little pick me up, because he knows who he married ā¤ļø.

What’s your favourite pick (you) up after a long old week?
