We’re excited to confirm the launch of ECY-UK

The Trauma Informed Training for Yoga Teachers is coming up in September 2026 ✨This important training will now be delivered through Education for Community Yoga UK (ECYUK) — an initiative dedicated to sharing trauma-informed practice and reducing power dynamics within yoga systems and teaching.

ECYUK was founded in 2026 by Lorraine Close and Laura Wilson, Directors of Edinburgh Community Yoga (ECY).

🧘‍♀️ Training Format
This course combines flexible online learning with in-person connection:

• 40 hours self-directed online coursework (available from 1st September)
• Live Q&A sessions via Zoom

📅 In-Person Dates (Saturdays)

Well they say the opposite of trauma is play! Thank you to our wonderful young participant Lochlin for helping us to remember the medicine of laughter by stealthily hiding a whoopy cushion under my yoga mat this morning. Still giggling now. :)

We’re delighted that ECY Teacher Naomi led her first session with the Happiness Group, run by Re-Act: Refugee Action Scotland at the weekend 💛

The group meets at Richmond Craigmillar Church, supporting asylum seekers and refugees as they adjust to life in Scotland. This week, Naomi shared a chair yoga taster session, creating a calm, welcoming space for relaxation, connection, and wellbeing.

It was a lovely start, and we’re really looking forward to more sessions with the group🌿✨

As the year draws to a close, we’re pausing — taking a breath to reflect on where we’ve been, what we’ve moved through, and how we’ve arrived here together.

2025 has asked a lot of many of us. We’ve heard from so many in our community about living with uncertainty, making difficult choices, and continuing to show up even when the way forward felt unclear. There has been quiet courage in that, and a deep sense of care — for ourselves, and for one another.

As we turn toward 2026 — the final chapter of ECY’s journey — our hearts feel full. Not with sadness, but with deep gratitude. For every shared practice, every conversation, every moment of growth, and for the trust you’ve placed in this space and in each other.

The year ahead invites remembering and celebrating, and trusting that the seeds planted through years of connection and care will continue to grow in ways seen and unseen.

As we close out 2025, we do so with gratitude — and with a few favourite December community class moments. This is Edinburgh Community Yoga.

We’ll be going offline now until the new year, creating a little space for rest and reflection. Wishing you a peaceful, gentle holiday season ✨

Didn’t remember to take a decent photo but an excellent day of teaching Trauma Informed practice to the yoga teacher training.

Always a joy to see these skills being incorporated into the fundamentals of teaching yoga and to hear the enthusiasm and passion for the work we do

As we step into the final leg of ECY’s journey, our hearts are full — not with sadness, but with gratitude for everyone who has walked beside us. Every class, every collaboration, every moment of growth — made possible by the incredible community that believed in what we were building.

Was it really June 2018 when we partnered with Marie-Anne Martin at Beetroot Sauvage Wellness Centre? It's going to be fun celebrating all that we have achieved together and thinking of those who have been part of this journey.

🌱 Remembering, celebrating, and trusting the seeds we’ve planted to keep growing

A Season of Change and New Beginnings

As winter draws in and the festive season approaches, we’ve been reflecting on cycles of change — the stillness of winter, the sparkle of Christmas, and the promise of new beginnings. It’s in this spirit that we share some difficult news: Edinburgh Community Yoga will close in 2026.

We want to be clear — we are not closing because our service is no longer needed, or because we aren't doing a good job. We are closing because there simply aren’t the funds available to keep the lights on. Like many third sector organisations, we’ve faced significant financial challenges in recent years, with reduced income and fewer grant opportunities. We’ll continue all our current projects, but by July 2026, ECY will have brought its work to a close.

The sad reality is that mental and physical health remains deeply impacted in areas of social deprivation. Isolation and loneliness are rising, and there are fewer and fewer options for people to support and be supported. We know our small offering has meant a great deal to many over the years. Creating community and connection — moving, breathing, coming home to ourselves — feels like a human right. One we cherish for ourselves and for offering to others.

So while there is huge sadness in letting go of the form ECY has taken, there is also hope. We trust that the legacy of this work will continue to unfold in meaningful ways. Yoga teaches us not to hold too tightly, to trust the emergent wisdom of life. And so we are surrendering, to make space for whatever comes next.

Over the next few months, we look forward to continuing our projects and beginning to imagine how we might celebrate all that we have achieved together. As one chapter closes, another begins — and we hold hope that the seeds planted through ECY will continue to grow.

Thank you for being part of this journey. ❤️🕊️

🧘‍♀️ Yoga on Social Prescription 🌿

At Edinburgh Community Yoga, we believe yoga should be accessible to everyone — not just those who can afford or feel comfortable walking into a studio.

As a not-for-profit social enterprise, our mission is to break down the financial, attitudinal, and accessibility barriers that stop people from experiencing the many physical, mental, and social benefits of yoga.

Through our Yoga on Social Prescription programme, we partner with GP practices and local agencies across Edinburgh, Fife and Midlothian to offer trauma-informed, referral-based classes in areas of social and economic deprivation.

Together, we’re creating spaces where wellbeing is truly inclusive — one breath, one community, one class at a time.
