This week's movie: BLINDED BY THE LIGHT

Javed is a Pakistani teenager who experiences racial and economic turmoil while living in Luton, England, in 1987. He writes poetry as a way to escape the intolerance of his hometown and the stubborn views of his traditional father. When a classmate introduces him to the music of Bruce Springsteen, Javed sees parallels between the singer's powerful lyrics and his own working-class environment. Springsteen's melodies soon inspire Javed to find his own voice and follow his dreams.

Don't miss tomorrow's Tuesday Matinée - The Friend

In The Friend, writer and teacher Iris (Naomi Watts) finds her comfortable, solitary New York life thrown into disarray after her closest friend and mentor (Bill Murray) dies suddenly and bequeaths her his beloved 150 lb. Great Dane. The regal yet intractable beast, named Apollo, immediately creates practical problems for Iris, from furniture destruction to eviction notices, as well as more existential ones, his looming presence constantly reminding her of her friend's problematic choices in both life and death. Yet as Iris finds herself unexpectedly bonding with the animal, she begins to come to terms with her past, her lost friend, and her own creative inner life.

Make sure you get your tickets for SONG SUNG BLUE next Tuesday at 2pm

"Rather than being sentimental, it’s a fundamentally good-natured film, paying homage, as Brewer says, to those who find their niche as entertainers beloved by those audiences who get the chance to find them and see what they can do." - Sydney Morning Herald

"The casting is ingenious." - The Times (UK)

"It’s easy listening, easy watching. A sequin-saturated, warm and funny blast from the past with top notes of drama and tragedy." - The Australian

"The determination to find greatness in the ordinary gives “Song Sung Blue” a magical, unforced luminescence that much more immodest films usually lack." - Wall Street Journal
