What is Judo?
Judo is a modern martial art and it has developed into an Olympic sport, judo was created in Japan in 1882 by Jigoro Kano subsequent to him studying jujitsu.
Judo is a dynamic combat martial art that requires some physical strength and good mental discipline. From a standing position, it involves techniques that allow you to throw your opponent onto the ground. On the ground, it includes techniques that allow you to pin your opponent down, to control them or apply chokeholds or joint locks.
Who would benefit from learning Judo techniques?
Anyone who is looking to improve their confidence, their mental strength, their fitness levels, their physical strength, their balance, their coordination and their flexibility.
Is there an age limit associated with Judo training?
In a word No. I started when I was 37, I am still training now at the age of 70. If you enjoy physical exercise then Judo is ok for you. My lessons are conducted with participant’s safety in mind and it is very rare for anyone to sustain an injury that does not recover quickly. Clearly the occasional bruise and muscle strain are inevitable.
The benefits of judo training are thus;
The throws, holds and avoidance techniques used in judo are an effective form of self-defence training. It also lowers your risk of sustaining injury in other sports as judo teaches you how to fall in a safe manner. Judo is an excellent workout for both your body and your brain.
Because Judo training involves close contact between two judokas it helps you develop your communication skills and helps you learn to work effectively with other people.
