You may have seen from our website and page that the courts will be open from 29 March! There are still some restrictions in place, particularly around using the clubhouse, so please read the LTA guidelines carefully. But do get out there and have fun – and remember to renew your membership in April and, hopefully, have a full year of great tennis – we’ve missed you all!

The Government has published its roadmap for the gradual and staged easing of lockdown restrictions in England, made possible by the pace of the vaccination programme.

Outdoor tennis courts will be able to open from 29 March. This will mean recreational tennis will be able to resume, including singles and doubles social play, 1:1 coaching and organised activity for small groups.

Please find the latest information published by the LTA here https://www.lta.org.uk/about-us/tennis-news/news-and-opinion/general-news/2020/march/coronavirus-covid-19---latest-advice/

We must avoid crowds waiting by the courts to play, so please pre-book using the website booking system: https://clubspark.lta.org.uk/bensontennisclub/Booking

LTA UPDATE: New Nationwide Tier 4 Restrictions
Following the Prime Minister’s announcement on 4 January of new national lockdown restrictions to be introduced across England, the LTA can confirm that regrettably all indoor and outdoor tennis facilities will need to close.

The Government has confirmed that elite sport is able to continue in line with the strict protocols and measures that are in place for it.

Organised outdoor sport for disabled people is also allowed to continue, and we will provide further detail on this once we have information from Government.

The LTA believes tennis is a naturally socially distanced sport that is safe to play and gives people of all ages the opportunity to exercise with friends or relatives. Tennis is important for people’s physical and mental health and we will continue to liaise with the Government to ask them to allow players back on court as soon as possible.

The Government has advised that this guidance should be followed immediately, and will be updating the law to reflect the new rules.

Based on our discussions with Government and following the further easing of lockdown restrictions, the LTA has developed an updated set of practical guidelines for venues, coaches and players.

https://www.lta.org.uk/about-us/tennis-news/news-and-opinion/general-news/2020/march/coronavirus-covid-19---latest-advice/

We do not have an on-line booking system as it has never been needed and we are a small club. Please be considerate of other players and limit your match to 5 games if there are people waiting to get on court. That way everyone will get to play. Currently we are reviewing if a court booking system is required - please contact us if you have a view on this

See https://clubspark.lta.org.uk/bensontennisclub/CourtUse for details of when courts are being used for coaching or other activities.

We will review as needed but let's all be kind to each other and play some tennis!!!

Because tennis won't be the same for a while longer we have reduced the cost of membership for the year commencing May 2020 by 50%*. To apply for membership at this rate see https://clubspark.lta.org.uk/bensontennisclub/Membership/Join or contact James on [email protected].

Please make sure you have paid for this seasons membership before you play, and help us monitor that only current members are using the courts. A new court code will be sent out when you join. Also remember that paid-for coaching outside of the official NTA coaches are not allowed. See here for details.

Please remember to bring your own tennis balls along if you play.

We will keep monitoring circumstances and keep these rules under review. Have fun, but stay distanced and safe.

Note from the BTC Committee
We have a lot to tell you following the Government's latest guidance and the interpretation of that advice by the Lawn Tennis Association. Having looked at this advice we believe we are right to reopen the courts on Wednesday - for only these two activities:
1. singles games where the players keep 2m apart at all times, and
2. games of doubles involving a single household (not games between two households).

So, we are opening the courts on Wednesday morning.

We know many players are itching to get back on court so the courts may be busy over the next couple of weeks. We do not have an on-line booking system as it has never been needed and we are a small club. Please be considerate of other players and limit your match to 5 games if there are people waiting to get on court. That way everyone will get to play.

We will review as needed but let's all be kind to each other and play some tennis!!!

Because tennis won't be the same for a while longer (limited people to play with, no evening games, no balls available) we will be reducing the cost of membership for the year commencing May 2020 by 50%*.

Thanks everyone who joined despite the restrictions. We have been very fortunate to be awarded a government grant to tide us over so we are happy to refund 50% of your fee paid to be in line with the fee other members are paying. If you wish to have a refund please email Caroline ([email protected]) stating what you have paid and the bank details for the refund to be paid to.

Court cleaning services have been hard to come by in lockdown however they are being professionally cleaned on Monday and Tuesday next week (there will be at least one court available at all times).

Please remember to bring your own tennis balls along if you play, and remember the clubhouse is out of bounds (so no floodlit tennis is possible).

For more advice see here https://www.lta.org.uk/about-us/tennis-news/news-and-opinion/general-news/2020/march/coronavirus-covid-19---latest-advice/

We will keep monitoring circumstances and keep these rules under review. Have fun, but stay distanced and safe.

Clubhouse sort out
We plan to have a major tidy at the club house at Benson. we have found there's a lot of clothing (mostly kids) that have been lying around for ages. We plan to take it all to the charity shop next week - so if it's yours, come and get it

Tuesdays evenings during the winter will be an interesting mix of social play and coaching. Our new coach Tom is running group intermediate coaching from 1900-2000, and doubles skills and strategy coaching 2000-2100. However, anyone who wants to play socially can also pop along from 1900, there's always a couple of courts not used for coaching and there's often players mixing in.

Remember there's more social tennis for adults every Thursday all year round from 1900 til late, match practice for team players at 1930 Wednesday nights and adult coaching for beginners or those of us out of practice on Monday nights 1900-2000
