I have a pole work clinic this Wednesday 12th August at Ludlow Farm. Huge indoor arena so loads of space and out of the sun.

I’m a bit late in sharing this but in May I passed my BHS stage 5 ride exam. This is one section of the overall “I” qualification.

The exam consists of six sections which was riding 5 horses and a theory session.

The first horse was a general assessment where we had to ride and assess a horse on the flat, over showjumps and XC fences, evaluate their way of going, make an improvement where possible and then value the horse.
I then went on to ride two dressage horses. Both horses working at Advanced Medium. Again we had to assess each horse through all movements within an Advanced medium tests including half pass and flying changes and we were then expected to improve the horse’s way of going.
After this we went on to the showjumping section where I was given a horse to jump up to 1.20m around a course and make an improvement in their jumping technique and quality of canter .
The final ridden element was XC where I had to ride and assess a horse jumping around fences at 1.05m and evaluate its way of going and potential for competition, as well as valuing him.
Finally came the theory session which was based a lot on training young horses, competition rules and regulations and applying the scales of training to horses competing at all levels.

I was a bit of a sweaty mess after I completed the six sections! I was extremely anxious about the showjumping element as I really didn’t confidently feel I improved the horse’s way of going but I had really lovely feedback and the assessors were complimentary about my riding, depth of knowledge and experience throughout the assessment.

I have a few people to thank who really helped me get prepared for this exam.

Sarah Thorne has deep knowledge of the assessment process and she kindly let me ride her horses in preparation.

Steph at Bovington gave me a lunge lesson (to help loosen my back) and a showjumping lesson.

Liz Trowbridge for being the most incredible British dressage encyclopaedia!

Finally my great friend Sarah Davy from Integrated body work who worked wonders on my stiff, wonky, slightly battered mummy body so I could actually do quite good sitting trot!! 🤣

I’m aiming to continue on to try and achieve the rest of the elements of the stage 5 to complete the “I” within the next two years. 🤞

I didn’t get round to taking many photos this evening but we had a fabulous clinic showjumping at Ludlow Farm. Well done to everyone battling the heat. It was a sweaty but really constructive session.

Tomorrow - Wednesday 8th July at 6pm.

I’m doing a 1 hour course jumping session at Ludlow Farm. It is likely to be a bit warm so we won’t be going wild but will be a good opportunity to have a tune up or educate a young horse.
The riders in this group are jumping approx. 80-90cm.
