Something fishy…
This evening I have been on high visibility patrol in the vicinity of Appleton Reservoir following increasing reports of anti social behaviour and theft of fishing rights.
You must ensure that before you go fishing that you have the appropriate rights and licenses. Water bailiffs patrol the area and perform routine checks on those casting their lines into the water. We are also working with colleagues from the Environment Agency to tackle ongoing issues!
This is a beautiful area that many people want to enjoy. They shouldn’t have to endure abuse, intimidation and theft by individuals who have little or no respect for others. We are stepping patrols up in the area and if you see us out and about please do stop and chat.
Please respect each other and your surroundings. Everyone should be able to enjoy a peaceful walk or time to sit down and legitimately fish without being subject to nuisance behaviour.

As water temperatures remain high, we urge anglers to carefully consider whether they should be fishing and the species they fish for to help protect our fish stocks.
Fish are particularly susceptible to the impacts of high-water temperatures as there is an inverse relationship between temperature and dissolved oxygen. In other words, as water temperature increases the amount of dissolved oxygen decreases.
This can ultimately impact the recovery of fish once caught, particularly when a fish is played for a long duration or when handled and released poorly. Remember, whilst fish may swim away after being caught, they can succumb to these impacts later.
Species such as pike, barbel and salmonids (e.g. brown trout) are particularly susceptible to the impacts of higher water temperatures and lower dissolved oxygen, so we suggest special careful considerations as to whether the conditions are right to target these species.
To help reduce the risk to our fish populations, we suggest:
• Taking particular care when playing, landing and releasing fish during warm weather.
• Avoiding fishing for larger fish or sensitive species if the water temperature exceeds 19°C by mid-morning (clubs may choose to update their social media accounts with daily updates).
• Minimising the use of ground-bait. As it decomposes, this can further reduce the amount of dissolved oxygen in the water. Fish feeding on ground-bait may have a greater oxygen need, so take longer to recover from being caught.
• Unhooking fish in the water if possible and only take them out of the water for unhooking if absolutely necessary (in rivers hold them facing upstream to recover)
• Avoiding taking photos. Where absolutely necessary, take photos in the water. Keeping a fish in the air, even for a few seconds, can greatly reduce its chances of surviving after capture and going on to spawn successfully.

Warnings over increased Asian Hornet sightings.
There is a call for the public and UK beekeepers to keep watch and report any sightings of Asian Hornets this summer. These Hornets do great damage to honey bees and other beneficial native species. People are being urged to keep on the look out for them, and help identifying them can be found here: https://www.nonnativespecies.org/non-native-species/species-alerts/
More information can be found on the Government page using the link below, where you can also find the online report form.

NOT A WASTE OF TIME:
Yesterday I represented Cheshire Constabulary at the Police and Crime Commissioner for Cheshire led Waste Crime Partnership Meeting.
It's a great initiative that includes representation from partners across the county, including the Environment Agency, Cheshire Fire & Rescue, Chester & Cheshire West Council, Cheshire East Council, the NFU and more.
We talk about current trends and what we're all doing to reduce which includes flytipping.
It's brilliant to see the work we're all doing is having an effect, but we know we have lots more to do. We have plenty of joint operations coming up to target the criminals who make money carrying out illegal activities and now more than ever, the police are proactively stopping waste carriers.
What can you do to help?
When you see people advertising on your page for removing rubbish, check they are a legitimate carrier. You can do this on the Environment Agency page.
You could ask the person on their post for their permit details? (If they're dodgy, they'll disappear off the page)
Legitimate carriers lose out to the criminal ones, so if they are genuine, you're actually helping them out. As a society we need to stop looking for the easy solutions, as your waste will simply end up in a field like in this picture!
A field that could be used to grow your food!
Thanks all and feel free yo share on your FB pages,
Sgt Simpson

Reports to the Environment Agency helping to prevent illegal activity.
Environment Agency Fisheries Enforcement Officers (FEO’s) often get called out based on reports from anglers and Angling Trust Voluntary Bailiffs, but not many end up like this.
Environment Agency FEO Neill Scrimgeour was recently responding to a report of ‘poachers setting illegal set lines in the river Lea’. Neill turned up looking for fish traps, but what he discovered was a small cage with two live birds trapped inside, as well as other traps including glue covered sticks to snare more birds. What began as a potential fish theft incident, became a wildlife crime with live animals being saved and helping the Hertfordshire Police Wildlife Unit to identify and arrest a suspect.
This is a perfect example of how reporting works from start to finish. Our Voluntary Bailiffs are regularly out patrolling and constantly report back to the Environment Agency. If you see anything suspicious on the bank please report it immediately using the EA 24hr incident hotline 0800 80 70 60.

As anglers spend hours quietly watching…..
Please look at this carefully and if you believe you see one take a picture or video of it then report it, this invasive hornet is bad news for our vital pollinators especially our honeybees…. Your very welcome to share this post with as many people or groups as possible.
