💥 TIP OF THE WEEK 💥

Q: "Can you give me a rundown on mugging tactics and baits for when the carp are cruising around on the surface, please?"

🗨 Sam Brown says: "Mugging is a brilliant method for catching huge weights of carp when the sun is shining and the fish just want to cruise about in the upper layers. It's won me alot of matches over the years and i try and keep it as simple as possible.

Most of my mugging is done on the pole so I will go through my two favourite rigs...

The Close Range Rig:
I use a .3 dibber float, heavy enough to swing or slap at crusing fish but not too big to make too much disturbance. This rig is all about being in control and accurate so I use a maximum of 2ft of line between the float and pole tip - just enough to drop the rig infront of any cruising carp and also to enable me to slap the rig if I do need to make that bit more noise! This is fished at 1ft deep with all shot directly under the float.

The Stealth Rig:
The second rig is more stealth - for those days when the fish wont come quite close enough and the only way to get them is to swing the rig towards them and keep the pole out the way. For this I use a heavier .4 dibber and 5-6ft of line between the float and pole tip so I can swing it right out to those fish past normal pole range, again set at 1ft deep and all shot under the float.

Bait:
A slow falling hookbait is best. Where allowed i use a punched piece of Dynamite Baits Specimen Tuff meat on a hair-rigged quickstop set up. As per the name, this is tougher than normal meat and doesn't come off on the strike. Perfect if you miss a bite!

With most venues not allowing meat, the next best thing is without a doubt one of the new Dynamite Baits Muggerz hookbaits. These are a slow sinking soft pellet that's the perfect alternative to meat. Bait them up on the same hair rigged quickstop set up and they are a tough texture that doesn't come off. White is my favourite colour so far but ive also caught alot on the red too as its creates a brilliant silhouette in the upper layers!

The Tactic:
Thats the rigs and baits all covered so onto the method. I'ts all about spotting which direction the fish is swimming in and trying to plop your hookbait infront of them. I aim to drop it around 1-2ft from their nose, any further away they can end up missing it and any closer it can spook them off."
