The Ram Exiles Social Cricket Club, Bath We're a social pub cricket team. We aim to play competitive cricket with good humour and grace. So, if you fancy a game of cricket, please get in touch!

We play exclusively social cricket against a mixture of pub, workplace and village sides, mainly on weekday evenings, but also on a few Sundays each year. Anyone is welcome play for us, even if you’ve never held a cricket bat before. Some of us good cricketers and others are still improving, but we all try to play competitive cricket with good humour, grace and sense of fun in the hope that, whatever the result both teams go home happy. We value players for themselves not their cricketing ability and ensure that everyone has a good level of involvement in the game.

Wookey Hole CC vs Ram Exiles CC - Sunday 6th September - Match Report

A magical end to the season

With the September sun warming the indecently beautiful Wookey Hole ground, the Ram Exiles completed their season with a four-wicket victory over a youthful and friendly home side.

The Wookey Hole innings was dominated by Charles Benson, with an explosive 91 from just 58 balls. His innings included eight fours and eight sixes and, for a while, threatened to turn a pleasant Sunday afternoon into a rather more demanding one for the Exiles.

Fortunately, there was remarkably little support at the other end. At one point losing 4 wickets for 14 runs. Neil was magnificent with the ball, removing 3 top order batsmen for just 6 runs in his 5 overs. Ken was scarcely less effective, conceding only 17 from his five overs and taking two wickets, while Simon, Jerin, Matt and Ed each claimed one.

Wookey Hole's even younger lower order resisted gamely with Dexter returning for a useful unbeaten 24, before the innings closed at 153. A special mention about tea. The hosts presented a delightful spread of savouries and cakes. A welcome break for the Ram to prepare for the final innings of the season.

The Ram reply was altogether more balanced and well-paced. Ed and Harry created a solid platform, both making 25. Harry was in a hurry, taking just 14 balls and lofting 2 mighty sixes. Neil, evidently deciding that three wickets were insufficient contribution for one afternoon, added a valuable 29 from 31 balls. Then came Ken, whose 28 from 39 balls provided exactly the sort of calm innings required as the target drew closer. James added 15 before being bowled by the wonderfully named Wilbur Ball. There was still time for the middle order to complete the job with Kenny departing for three, and RHE wrapping up the innings on 10.

The Ram Exiles won by four wickets. Yet the scorecard tells only part of the story. Wookey Hole provided delightful opposition: young, enthusiastic, generous in spirit and seemingly determined that everybody should enjoy their cricket. The ground itself was stunning, one of those glorious English settings in which the game can occasionally appear almost incidental to the landscape around it.

A special mention for Pete and Chris for their devotion to the cause. Pete ump’d for the entire 70 overs, whilst Chris helped with scoring, umpiring and all-round cheer leading.

As the sun began to drop, the cricket gave way to beers at the local Wookey Hole Club and the familiar end-of-season post-mortem. The few hosts over 18 years old joined us and generously shared jugs of somewhat questionable Diesel (Guinness and Cider) and some sort of local Cider. A beautiful ground, generous hosts, sunshine, lunch, beer and a four-wicket win. And a lovely bunch of blokes. Cricket, in other words, exactly as it should be.

Another win today, in one of our favourite games of the year, against Wookey Hole. The perfect way to end a really fun season (once the rain stopped...)

16 years ago we celebrated the end of an undefeated season by with match pitting the Lambs (newer members) against the Rams (more established players). The Lambs won.

Many of the Rams and Lambs still belong to the club, although we're all Rams now and we have a new cohort of Lambs!

Winsley CC vs Ram Exiles CC – Match Report

On a perfect English evening at the beautiful hilltop Winsley Cricket Club ground, overlooking the White Horse and sporting one of the very few green squares outside Lords, the Oval, Headingley, Old Trafford, Edgbaston and a few Premier League pitches, the Rams took on a team spanning at least seven decades in age range.

Winsley started the batting against the fearsome Rams attack bowling led by Neil and Aaron. In the second over Aaron took a wicket with his first ball. Facing the attack from the other end was a member of the Zimbabwe Women’s Team, Mo (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Modester_Mupachikwa), who guided the ball deftly through the slips, third man, cover, square, mid-wicket and pretty much all other points despite being of small stature. She was joined at the wicket by Tebb and the two built up a 50-run partnership. In the meantime Paul and Dave took up bowling honours, Paul eventually taking the wicket of Tebb with a wicket maiden. Ed and Simon then kept the run rate reasonably slow followed by Chris and Harry; Harry swapping the wicket keeping gloves with Chris, and Neil returning to the attack for the last over.

133 to catch. Rams to bat. Winsley then put on a fly past for their visitors, an Airbus A400M Atlas, a European four-engine turboprop military transport aircraft designed by Airbus Military, now Airbus Defence and Space, flying low over the pitch (technical details supplied by our umpire Pete the Pilot). As the sun started to fade and the light was disappearing over the horizon Ed and Rupert strode purposefully to the wicket and started to set about their bowlers led by Oliver, Vin, Ellie and Clive who put in four overs a piece; well Ed started setting about their bowlers but Rupert maintained a Boycottesque anchor role. Ed motored to a magnificent 49 before retiring and handing over to Dave who immediately requested the sightscreen be moved slightly to the right for his oncoming cover drives. At the other end Rupert maintained a staunch defence of his wicket. In the footsteps of Ed, Dave crashed the ball to the boundary reaching 30 and retiring. Harry then marched to the wicket with more than half a dozen overs remaining and only a little over 30 runs to win. Rupert meanwhile staunchly defended his wicket. With three overs remaining, Rams galloped to a comfortable victory. Meanwhile Rupert maintained a staunch defence of his wicket.

Has any remake ever eclipsed the original?

An argument can certainly be made for Scorsese’s Cape Fear…

But last season’s inexorable pursuit of victory over our indomitable opponents The Star was always going to be a tough act to follow and so it proved to be.

141 was the total they posted.
Unremarkable in itself as last year’s was loftier.

As Chico said, “That’s the greatest shot, I’ve ever seen”.
“The Worst, I was aiming at the horse”, replied Britt.

Yes, you’ve got it.
The 1960 remake of Kurosawa’s 1954 epic The Seven Samurai.

The plot.
A group of 7 gunfighters hired to protect a small Mexican village from a group of marauding bandits.

Fortifications were built but to no avail.

The Exiles were simply overwhelmed.

It might have been the highest grossing Hollywood film ever in the former Soviet Union with an Academy Award nominated score but those less than Magnificent Seven simply failed at the Box Office.

Shot down like ducks at a fairground.

The New York Times wrote “ don’t expect anything like the ice cold suspense and the pile driver tempo of the original”.

The Washington Post “rough, tough most of the way but there’s a serious dip in the final third”.

Only Elias, Lovell and Harley offered any resistance.
And like Chris ( Brynner)
Vin (McQueen) and Chico (Buchholz) walked away at the end.

The Los Angeles Times praised the boundary dialogue “by turns virile, rowdily funny”.

Ram Exiles 127 All Out.

It was a Box Office disappointment but 7 days later Kate Winsley changed all that.

No red kites this week, just an Airbus A400M Atlas, as ID-ed by our resident RAF officer.

Good containing bowling was followed by assertive batting to chase down the win in 17 overs.

Another great evening, thanks for being welcoming hosts.

In 2001 the great American storyteller Elmore Leonard listed his 'Ten Rules For Good Writing' - the first was 'Never open with the weather'. I'm going to disregard that...

Under another glorious summer sun the Ram Exiles took on the Southstoke stalwarts at the oh-so-scenic Brownsword Ground, looking to extend a rare winning streak on actual green grass lovingly prepared by local cricketing legend Woody The Groundsman. Skipper Harry trusted the Jones duo of Matt and Ken to open the bowling, and what a decision that was! After 6 overs Southstoke were reeling at 13 for 4. It was almost like the Ram last week ... Except that the Ram fielding was much sharper than BANES'. Special mention must go to Brad, Alex and James C [ie the yoof] for tearing round the field, cutting off boundaries and shutting down Southstoke scoring, and as for Ken's catch at square leg - it was truly a joy to behold. Skipper Harry, Simon, Dave, John and keeper Tim [no byes in this game!!] were also in a 'they shall not pass' mindset, and after 10 overs Southstoke had only amassed 42 runs. Alas, special mention must also be made of the injury roll-call which might well curtail the Jones duo's season, and left Brad properly bruised.

Enter two of Southstoke's doughtiest stalwarts Mike Tolley and Duncan Nash. Assertive batting took 70 runs off the next 10 overs and so the stage was set for the Ram Exiles to chase down 112 as the sun dipped behind the trees, the red kites wheeled overhead and the golden pillars on Beckford's Tower lost their dazzle.
Openers Ed and Dave watchfully set about their work, and grafted just 11 runs from the first 4 overs. But by the time Dave departed in the 8th over a further 35 runs had been pillaged. Ken joined Ed and 2 overs later, at the halfway mark, the score stood at 71 for 1. Ed's retirement on 27 and Ken's dismissal for 16 brought a different style of pillaging to the stage. Tim, James and Harry had all worked out that the shortest boundary was through mid-off, and as the wagon wheel shows they went large. Skipper Harry completed the chase with a towering six, and it was three wins in three games!
