Phillip Gray and Eaglescliffe Pigeon Club remembers Alan Armstrong, of the highly respected Armstrong & Son partnership, who passed away at the end of July. Alan was far more than simply a successful pigeon fancier. He was a familiar and much-respected figure within the club, a dedicated pigeon man whose involvement with Eaglescliffe stretched across many years, and someone who made an enormous contribution both through his racing achievements and his service to the club.

The North Liverpool Federation youngsters faced their sternest examination of the season so far from Monmouth on 15th August. Three of the lofts that have been amongst the real heavyweights of the Federation this season — Rees Bros & Caples, Franny McDowell & Son and Muirhead, Son & Farley — all had pigeons right at the sharp end. However, there could only be one winner, and once again it was Rees Bros & Caples who came out on top, producing a tremendous performance to take 1st and 2nd North Liverpool Federation.

In the Burton & South Derbyshire Fed, young Jack Bourke of Stretton gets a clear winner to take 1st Fed out of Marlborough (1). Thirteen-year-old Jack claimed his first ever Federation win on 1587 with the same blue pied Wijnant x Pitbull hen that was 2nd Club the previous week out of Cheltenham.

Ray Knight highlights the history of the NRCC Lerwick race. It is hard to believe that the first race from Lerwick took place 125 years ago. In those days, Lerwick was a rapidly expanding and bustling fishing port. Today, Shetland has a population of just 23,000, yet the islands land more fish than England, Wales and Northern Ireland combined. Of course, the reason the North Road Championship Club was in Lerwick wasn’t for its fish, but its Blue Riband event, the King George V Cup race.

John David reports on the ups and downs encountered by Jason Bright, who has had a difficult old bird season, with the possibility of him having to move his birds off the land at short notice. In addition, his loft suffered an outbreak of young bird sickness at the end of June, but many of his friends rallied round to ensure he had a good team for the young bird races. Philip Jay discusses the weather predictions of a few months ago, which told us we were in for a scorching summer. These predictions have now come true.
