Choose for the life you have.
There probably is not one perfect breed for you.
There may be several that would fit your life really well, and several others that you absolutely love the look of but would make everyday life much harder than it needs to be.
That is the bit worth being really honest about.
Forget what is fashionable.
Forget the dog you saw on Instagram.
Try not to choose according to colour, markings or the fact that one puppy happens to be particularly cute.
Think about the adult dog.
Think about what that breed was originally bred to do, how much exercise and training it is likely to need, what sort of temperament would suit your household and whether you genuinely enjoy the things that dog is likely to enjoy.
Then think about whether you are ready to put the work in.
That gorgeous companion you have pictured in your head does not arrive fully formed at eight weeks old.
You build that relationship.
You teach your puppy how to live in your world, while also learning how they see theirs.
That is such a huge part of getting a puppy right from the beginning.
Choosing carefully does not guarantee that everything will always be easy. Puppies are still puppies, training has its ups and downs, and there will almost certainly be days when you wonder what on earth you have done.
Choosing a dog that genuinely suits your life does give you a much better starting point, though.
