🏆🎾 Wonderful Woodland Finals 🎾🏆 Part 2

It’s a family affair! 👨‍👩‍👧‍👦🎾

This weekend’s finals saw plenty of family action with father and son duo Nick and Jonathan Evans playing an excellent match in men’s finals just being pipped at the post at the end of the 2nd set. The whole family are members at the club including young Zak, aged 4.

At the other end of the scale, Woodland veteran, Roger Norvill - 87 years young, won a trophy for the 2nd year running - this time in the veteran’s men’s doubles. Roger has been a member of the club for over 50 years — now that’s Woodland commitment! 💚🎾

And keeping it in the family, Roger’s daughter Claire also featured in two finals this weekend, coming away with the Ladies’ Doubles trophy. 🏆

From generations of the same family to decades of membership, it’s stories like these that make Woodland so special. 💚

This weekend, 5th and 6th September, saw Woodland’s annual Club Championships Finals Weekend. There was far too much to celebrate for just one post, so we’ll be sharing the joy across the week! 😁

Nine finals over two days in glorious sunshine ☀️ — five Senior and four Veterans’ finals.

💚Saturday

🎾 Mixed Doubles
Katie Ashman & Alex de la Cruz took on Jenny Purcell & Ed Billett in an extremely close match, with Katie and Alex taking the win as reigning champions.

🎾 Ladies’ Doubles
Jenny and Katie were soon back on court as Jenny & Lucy Johannsen competed against Katie & Claire Norvill. An exciting three-setter, with Katie and Claire eventually getting the win once again.

🎾 Men’s Chairman’s Cup
Ben Crump and Tom Powell battled it out in another exciting three-set match, with Ben taking the trophy.

🎾 Veterans’ Mixed Doubles
Frances Ball & Bernie Batt took victory over Carol Burrows & Mike Adams.

🎾 Veterans’ Men’s Doubles
Bernie and Mike were back on court against each other, with 87-year-old Roger Norvill and Mike taking the win against Bernie and Club Chairman Martin Potter — another fantastic match to watch!

💚Sunday

🎾 Ladies’ Singles
Katie won a hard-fought match against Claire to take the title — giving Katie three trophies for the second year running!

🎾 Men’s Doubles
Father and son team Nick & Jonathan Evans faced Ed & Tom in another really close match, which eventually went Ed and Tom’s way.

🎾 Veterans’ Ladies’ Doubles
Another thrilling contest saw Carol Burrows & Frances Ball eventually lose out to Gail Tasker & Sian McDermott.

🎾 President’s Men’s Singles
The final match of the day was a powerful contest, with Ollie Fuller triumphing over Ben Crump to reclaim the trophy after a year’s absence.

A huge well done to all our finalists for two fantastic days of tennis! 👏🎾

And a big thank you to all the members, family and friends who came along to support, enjoy the fabulous food and soak up the wonderful Woodland friendship. 💚

🎾 Matches start at 10.00am on both Saturday and Sunday

👋 Everyone is welcome – come along and support our finalists!

🥪 Sandwiches and cakes will be available throughout both days, so grab a cuppa and settle in for some great tennis. ☕🍰

🏆 Presentations for all finals will take place at the end of play on Sunday, at approximately 1.00pm.

🎳🎾 End of League Celebration! 🎾🎳

On Friday night, we swapped the tennis courts for the skittles alley as our league teams came together to celebrate the end of another fantastic season!

A brilliant evening of skittles, plenty of laughs, good food and great company. It was the perfect way to celebrate everyone's hard work and commitment throughout the season.

Our Junior Holiday Camps are officially underway! 🎾🙌

It’s been fantastic to see the courts full of young players enjoying plenty of tennis, games and fun throughout the holidays.

We are delighted to have been awarded a grant from the Barclays Community Sport Fund, being delivered in partnership with Sported.

The Barclays Community Sport Fund offers grants, training and support resources to help reduce inequalities in sport – with a focus on football, tennis and cricket. The fund supports community groups and grassroots sports organisations (like ours) who make sport more accessible to young people from underrepresented groups.

We're incredibly grateful for this support and are looking forward to sharing our plans soon. Watch this space to see how the funding will help Woodland continue to grow and make tennis even more accessible. 🎾

Our Men's Tournament took place today in glorious sunshine, with plenty of members and spectators creating a brilliant atmosphere throughout the day.

There was some excellent tennis on display, with closely contested matches from the very first round right through to the final. It was great to see so many players in such good spirits.

Congratulations to Alex and John, who were crowned champions after a thrilling final against Chris and Rich. The match went all the way to a deciding tie-break, providing the perfect finish to a brilliant day's tennis. 🏆

The day was rounded off perfectly with Martin's BBQ, giving everyone the chance to relax and celebrate after a fantastic day's play. 🌭

A huge thank you to everyone who organised, took part and supported the event. We couldn't have done it without you. 👏
