Doing Tees RC and the whole North East proud by becoming British j16 champion in a massively competitive field down at Bournemouth yesterday at the British Beach Sprint Championships!

Amazing work Sophie, keep it up!💪

🥇British Rowing Beach Sprints Championships 🇬🇧

This weekend saw one of our juniors, Sophie Bentley, make the journey down to Bournemouth to compete at the BR Beach Sprints Championships and not only did she compete she walked away with the Gold medal in a stacked WJ161x event!

Following a relatively recent introduction to Beach Sprints with the North East Beach Sprints Academy Sophie has excelled herself, doing the junior programme and the wider club incredibly proud and demonstrates her commitment to the sport as well as the ability to row on both the river and the sea!!

Alongside Sophie, a massive shout out to the other competitors from Northern clubs including Tynemouth Rowing Club Hexham Rowing Club Juniors QEHS Hexham: Sixth Form Newcastle University Boat Newcastle University Boat ClubmSunderland Rowing Clubwe can be as a region!

Scottish Beach Sprint & Offshore Champs 2026 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

WCRC travelled up to St Andrews for a weekend of racing, but also a weekend of firsts!

Saturday got underway with the U19 mixed 2x beach sprint where Harry and Elyssa took a 🥈

The women's quad, Nicola, Julie, Harriet & Michaela, coxed by the ruthless Esme, took🥇in the Offshore race

Next up U16 1x beach sprint, where Harry put in a mighty shift, but the waves had other ideas. A capsize near the end of the race put him in 4th place

Sunday saw some different beach sprints in the form of mixed quads!

The WCRC quad, not to be deterred by being all female, were pipped at the finish by a rogue wave in favour of Eastbourne. We have it on good authority that this may be the start of beach sprinting for them, so watch this space!

A composite quad of Hal (Tynemouth) Sefi, Harry and Maya (Chester-le-Street) raced with vengeance bringing back a 🥉

W2x offshore was the next exciting race, with Sefi & Maya dominating throughout to claim 🥇

The last race of the day was U19 mixed 2x offshore with Harry & Elyssa adding to their collection another 🥈

We’ve had a few questions lately asking how coastal rowing technique differs from flat-water rowing technique — and it’s a great question.

While the boats are essentially the same — just a little wider, shorter and built for much tougher conditions — the techniques used to move them can differ sometimes subtly, sometimes greatly, depending on what the sea is doing.

From the catch and drive to the finish, recovery and overall rhythm, good coastal technique is about adapting your stroke to keep the boat moving efficiently through constantly changing conditions.
