OK, it's a weird question. But, if you really think about it, it's also kinda weird how we know where our feet are and what they are doing even when we're not looking at them.
Welcome to the wonderful world of proprioception. This is our unconscious ability to know and control where our body is in space without consciously thinking about it. Of course, getting your body into yoga poses is a great way to train our proprioception. And feeling more in control of our body has lots of other benefits including better balance and mobility, and even a more stable sense of self.

Go on, close your eyes and pay attention 😌 Humans are very visual and tend to prioritise what we can see. Sometimes that means we miss more subtle information - sounds, body sensations, thought patterns, emotions. In yoga turning inwards is called pratyahara or withdrawal of the senses and it's an incredibly valuable practice for learning to pay careful attention.
Give it a go!

Wrapping up our resilience theme with a focus on stability. Like feeling inflexible, people often tell me that their 'balance is terrible'. On one hand I'm like - all the more reason to practice - while on the other hand it kind of misses the point.
The kind of physical and mental stability that we really need in our day to day life isn't about standing on one leg. It's about being able to trust that our bodies will do what we need them to do. It's about knowing that problems and emotions big and small will come up regularly, and trusting that we can handle them. Standing on one leg helps with the physical stuff, but also with practising falling and picking ourselves up afterwards.
FYI - any amount of standing on one leg helps with balance, even if you wobble, hold on to something or put your foot down repeatedly!

SAVE THE DATE! Sunday 21 June is the longest day of the year. Join me on Cullercoats beach at 4am to (hopefully) watch the sun rise over the sea. If the weather is with us it is a truly magical experience 🌅
Everyone is welcome and it's free, but I will be collecting donations for Cullercoats RNLI. You can sign up in advance if you want, although you can also just turn up on the day.

When I tell people I'm a yoga teacher, guess what they usually say...? It's usually something like "I'm not flexible enough to do yoga". Now, first of all - how are people ever going to get more flexible if they don't do something about it? And second, yoga isn't just about twisting yourself into uncomfortable looking shapes (there's definitely a bit of that, but it's good for you 😉).
Yoga can definitely help you be more flexible in your body, but it can also help you develop other kinds of flexibility. More flexible thought processes, a more adaptable nervous system (known as vagal tone), better capacity to sit with discomfort. Honestly the list goes on and on. But you'll never find out if you convince yourself you have to be able to touch your toes first.
