For the first time in 10 years, I stepped away from grassroots coaching and focused entirely on developing the WGFL structure and the WSG Programme.
What a year it has been.
š 6 League Cup Finals completed
ā½ Nearly 1,000 girls supported through grassroots and representative football
š„ WSG U12s secured a Top 3 league finish in their debut season
š Continued growth across girlsā football throughout the region
What started as a vision to create more opportunities for girls has grown into something much bigger than I ever imagined.
None of this happens without the players, coaches, volunteers, parents and clubs who continue to trust, support and buy into the journey. Thank you.
Looking ahead to 2026/27ā¦
ā½ WSG Trials
ā½ Squad Selection
ā½ Pre-Season Programme
ā½ Pre-League Promotion
ā½ Festival of Football
With 60+ teams set to move through the WGFL across U9-U15 next season, the opportunities for girlsā football continue to grow.
The momentum is undeniable. The aim remains the same: raise standards, create opportunities and ensure every girl who wants to play football has a pathway to do so.
A short 3-week break, then we go again.
Thank you to everyone who played their part this season. šā½

On Saturday, we hosted our first WGFL League Cup Finals following another successful season for the Wigan Girls Football League. What should have been a celebration of how far girls football in Wigan has come has sadly ended in disappointment and upset.
Over the last two years, I have worked tirelessly to build a sustainable girls league in Wigan from the ground up. From having no structured pathway locally, we now have close to 700 girls involved across two seasons, partnerships with nearly 40 clubs, and projections of over 60 teams joining the WGFL in September.
When the WGFL was originally approved, it was made very clear that the boys league would have no involvement in the direction or running of the girls league. For two years, that remained the case while I independently managed the operations of the league ā from communication with clubs and managers, organising fixtures and tournaments, welfare and safeguarding responsibilities, to supporting the overall growth of the girls game in Wigan.
This league has always been about creating opportunities for girls to play football locally, removing barriers, and building positive relationships with clubs, coaches, players and families. Together, we created something special.
During Saturdayās final, an issue arose regarding ineligible players. Following rules and regulations, a fair decision was made on the day which ensured the girls still got to play football, families still got to enjoy the occasion, and all players received recognition for a competitive final. The agreed outcome was accepted by those involved.
However, my decision was later overruled by members of the WDYFL committee ā despite previously having no involvement in the girls league. The situation left me feeling overpowered, belittled and deeply disrespected considering everything that has been built over the last two years.
Following the final, I raised my concerns openly and professionally. Since then, I have been removed from the league portal, removed from the website as Girls League Secretary, and essentially that I have been ārelieved of my dutiesā pending an investigation of the matter.
Instead of reflecting proudly on two successful years and preparing for an exciting third season, I have spent the last four days feeling silenced, ignored and unsupported.
I never intended to take this to social media, but after having no communication or support, I feel it is important people understand why.
My priority has always been, and will always remain, girls football. I am incredibly proud of what has been achieved through the WGFL and grateful to every club, coach, player, parent and volunteer who has supported the journey so far.
Girls football in Wigan deserves strong leadership, structure, support and progression without barriers. I will continue to do everything I can to ensure the girls and clubs involved continue to have opportunities to grow, compete and enjoy the game we all love.
Thank you to everyone who has supported me over the last two years. Your messages and support mean more than you know.

Out of possession. šā½
A very good session from the WFC troops this evening!
Always nice to mix up the sessions with fun whilst focusing around different Principles of Play. Plenty of touches on the ball is always a key part of these sessions, keeping the futsal message aligned throughout our current block whilst we continue to access 2G before our return to the sports hall.
Great alignment around playing out of possession, with key points clearly being understood and applied by all players. A high standard of understanding, communication and game intelligence on show throughout the evening šā½

WSG hitting new heights.
Very proud of this District tonight!
Close to 40 U13-U14 girls nominated and trialling for the Wigan School Girls Programme.
A huge shoutout to the 70% of high schools represented this evening and the incredible depth of talent right across the Borough.
Massive credit also goes to the staff and volunteers who continue to turn up and drive the values of this programme at the heart of everything they do.
While some districts are scaling back, this district will not stop pushing for new heights. After seeing the National Schools Finals last weekend, we know thatās a stage weāll be aiming to reach in the coming years.
As always, thank you to Leisure United Fosters for continuing to facilitate and support our programme ā a partnership we are incredibly proud of.

Daughter interested in Futsal, come and join us.
U10s, U11s & U12s welcome at our current phase along with U11s boys.
Tuesday nights in Wiganš
And weāre back! After what felt like a long Easter break ā adapting around no sports hall access during exam season ā weāve put together a solid 5-week block on 2G to keep the WFC group ticking over ahead of our Games Programme kicking off mid-June.
Standards were top tonight. High tempo, lots of touches on the ball, and competitive activation games that linked clearly to the session outcomes. Strong focus on repetition and transitions from attack to defence.
Every player delivered ā A* all round.

WSG U13s
A team that will stay with me foreverāan incredibly special group and one of the very best Iāve had the honour to coach.
Often underestimated, but united through togetherness, team spirit, passion, determination, and an unwavering willingness.
People often say I could pick any squad and chase silverware, but thatās never been my focus. My values as a coach come first. As Girls Programme Lead of the WSG Programme, this age group is where it all started for me. Over the years, weāve seen countless players pass through representative football, and as we know, District Football is about showcasing the very best talent our borough has to offer.
Now, as our U13s campaign comes to a close, it feels only right to mark the moment with a celebrationātomorrow night at our neighbours, Knowsley St Helens at Ruskin.
A big thank you to a great friend who has supported the programme from the very beginning. He first came in to help with Hawkley FC boysā side when I was five years into it, losing a League Cup Final after being 2ā0 up.. A couple of years later came the message: āCan you support the trials for Wigan School Girls?ā What started as simply observing soon became something much more, giving me the chance to step back from frontline coaching.
And as for Dawbs⦠fair to say heās never regretted getting involved in the girlsā game eitherš one thing I will say, the environment and culture has not only been embedded into the U13s but a continued presence for every WSG Squad who comes into play!
Thank you, Mr Dawber.
WSG U13sāmemories that will last a lifetime.
