Highfield 2nd XI vs Liverpool 2nd XI
06/06/26

Highfield won the toss and elected to bat first. We posted a competitive total but were unable to defend it as Liverpool chased the target with 4 wickets spare.

Highfield Innings – 203 All Out (45.0 overs)

We made a solid start but lost wickets at regular intervals, preventing us from building a match-defining total.

Tom Cunliffe top-scored with a well-made 58, while several batters got starts but couldn’t go on to make big scores:

Jack Cunliffe – 22
Tom Cunliffe – 58
Matthew Thorley – 29
Matthew Wallace – 22
Ethan Mclachlan – 21

Lower order contributions were limited, though Henry Jones (11) and Abrar Khan (3*) battled hard. We picked up 27 extras, which helped the total but also reflected some loose bowling from the visitors.

Liverpool CC Innings – 204/6 (36.2 overs)
Liverpool chased the target comfortably, led by a strong opening knock from Jack Simmons (49) and a match-winning unbeaten 59 from Basweer Mohammed.

Key Partnerships:
Liverpool built useful stands, particularly the middle-order contributions that kept the required rate under control.

Highfield Bowling Highlights:
Ethan Mclachlan – 3/52 (10 overs) – our best bowler on the day
Matthew Wallace – 1/34 (12.2 overs) with good control
Abrar Khan – 1/36 (5 overs)
Charlie Farrell – 1/26 (6 overs)

We created chances and took 6 wickets, but the visitors batted sensibly, rotated strike well. A couple of costly overs proved decisive.

Summary & Reflections
Result: Lost by 4 wickets
A frustrating afternoon after posting a defendable 203. The batting unit showed glimpses of promise with multiple players reaching the twenties, but we lacked the big partnership needed to push the score closer to 230-250.

With the ball, Ethan Mclachlan and the attack as a whole created pressure at times, but we couldn’t sustain it across the full chase. In the field a couple of dropped catches cost us.

Positives:
Tom Cunliffe’s half-century
Ethan Mclachlan’s three wickets

Competitive total on the board despite regular wickets

We’ll take the learnings into the next fixture and look to bounce back strongly.

Credit to Liverpool CC for a professional chase.

Come On Highfield! 🏏

Highfield 1st XI Secure Thrilling 3-Wicket Victory Over Sefton Park 06/06/26

We had a hard-fought win against Sefton Park CC at home. Having lost the toss and been asked to bowl first, Highfield produced an excellent bowling and fielding display to restrict Sefton to 103 all out in 38.2 overs.

The chase was then completed with 3 wickets and plenty of overs to spare, securing a valuable 25-point victory.

Sefton Park made a cautious start but struggled to build meaningful partnerships. Their innings was anchored by Sarhad Rustom, who batted through most of the order for a gritty 64 (95 balls, 10 fours). However, he lacked support as regular wickets fell around him.

Highfield’s bowling attack was outstanding, led by Sam Rotherham who claimed 4 wickets for 24 runs in 12 overs (including 3 maidens).

Thobile Hlatuka provided excellent control with 2 for 35 from 13 overs (4 maidens), while Jamie Darbyshire (2 for 20) and Lahiru Wellalage (1 for 11) also chipped in.

The bowlers were well supported in the field, with strong catching and pressure maintained throughout.

Fall of wickets: 0-1, 8-2, 33-3, 34-4, 42-5, 45-6, 55-7, 82-8, 103-9, 103-10.

Sefton were eventually bowled out for 103, setting Highfield a modest but potentially tricky target on a pitch that offered some assistance to the bowlers.

Chasing 104 to win, Highfield got off to a solid start but lost wickets at regular intervals. Michael Gaskell (20) and Michael Simpson (18) provided stability early on, but the middle order faced pressure from Sefton’s spinners and seamers, particularly Huzaifa Zubair (3 for 56).

The turning point came with Harry Moxham’s composed unbeaten 31 off 35 balls (4 fours, 1 six), which steadied the ship. He found good support from the lower order, including Javid Ahmad Niazi (10*) as the pair guided the team home.

Key contributions in the chase:
Harry Moxham – 31* (match-winning knock)
Michael Gaskell – 20
Michael Simpson – 18

Fall of wickets: 26-1, 30-2, 33-3, 45-4, 58-5, 65-6, 95-7.

Highfield reached 107 for 7 in just 31.3 overs, winning with 3 wickets in hand.

Match Summary
Sefton Park CC: 103 all out (38.2 overs) – Sarhad Rustom 64
Highfield CC: 107/7 (31.3 overs) – Harry Moxham 31*

Result: Highfield CC won by 3 wickets
Bowling highlights: Sam Rotherham (4-24), Thobile Hlatuka (2-35), Jamie Darbyshire (2-20).

This was a professional all-round performance from Highfield. The bowlers set the platform with disciplined lines and lengths, while the batters showed composure under pressure to chase down the target. A great team effort and an excellent way to start the season with maximum points.

Well played, lads! On to the next one. 👍🐿️🏏

Match Report: Highfield U13s Blue vrs Westleigh U13s 08/06/26

On a night where we only had the one fixture it was nice to take 13 players to Westleigh, with two of our under 11s sportingly playing for our hosts to make up their numbers.

3 unbeaten and full of confidence we opted to bat on a glorious night, we were soon wondering if that was a mistake with the normally reliable Josh back in the shed in the first over.

Matt Mellor was joined by Nathan with both setting a solid platform. The score reached 40 before Nathan was bowled by a good nut for a brisk run a ball 22.

Matt Mell was joined by Matt Mc, but Matt Mell soon followed Nathan back after a great catch from our own Ben, Matt Mell prob didn’t have the personal score his shots deserved. Jamie sadly chipped one straight back to the bowler and suddenly we were 42/4.

Some major rebuilding to be done, and we did just that. Olly hit a massive 6 and a couple of nice 4s contributing a quick fire 20 in a 62 run partnership with Matt. With Olly again falling to a good Yorker, Matt was now joined by Jack. Matt reached a superb 50 from 40 balls playing shots all around the wicket giving away no chances, once Matt retired Madison joined Jack and the pair pushed on the score to 144/5 from our 20, Jack contributing a handy 13 not out. A great effort.

With runs on the board the aim was to get some early overs to the lesser experienced players to give them the opportunity to bowl at opening batters. Every bowler was superb with wickets being picked up at regular intervals against the Westleigh batters.

Good wickets for Joseph, Nathan, Jack, Ben and Matt Mc with off spin. To cap off a good personal performance Matt also took 2 catches and a direct run out just moments after being denied a direct hit the over before.

There was also a fantastic 30 minutes where Highfield were bowling at 2 Highfield players, both James and Freddie B got some good batting in the middle against our own bowlers. Westleigh finished their innings on 41/9. I’ve probably missed out some but the scorecard isn’t quite correct.

We wish our hosts well, their team never threw in the towel and the whole game was played in the right spirit. Cheers to the parents from myself, Andy and Jon.

Match Report – Highfield U11 vs St Helens U11 Date: 09.06.26

It was a sunny but chilly evening as the Squirrels 🐿️ welcomed St Helens CC for another exciting U11 match.

Highfield lost the toss and were asked to bat first.

Opening pair Chamiru and Aaria gave Highfield a strong start. Both ran brilliantly between the wickets, with Chamiru picking up quick singles and scoring a couple of boundaries, while Aaria supported well throughout the partnership.

The second pair, Phillip and Gauresh, came to the crease next. Phillip kept the scoreboard ticking with singles and good running between the wickets. Gauresh tried his best to support Phillip and worked hard despite being unlucky with a few run outs.

The third pair, Freddy B and Josh, made another positive start. Freddy B played some lovely shots and kept the scoreboard moving, including a brilliant boundary. Josh supported well and helped build a strong partnership.

The fourth pair, James and Marley, came to the crease and batted well together. James played some excellent shots through cover and added quick singles. Marley, playing his first game of the season after recently joining training, tried his very best to support James and showed great effort in his first match.

The final pair, Freddie A and Harley, finished the innings strongly. Both started confidently, with Freddie playing some good shots and rotating the strike well alongside Harley, who supported brilliantly.

Highfield finished on 308 for 8 wickets.

After a quick team talk in the changing room with Bala, the Squirrels 🐿️ came out to field full of energy.

Celebrating success !

This is what Highfield Cricket Club - Wigan is all about!

Young Jack aged just 14, stepped into the wicket keeping role for our 2nd XI over the weekend and did an absolutely outstanding job!

On our club badge it says "Fortis Ad Fortem" - that translates to "The Strong to the Brave". Jack thoroughly represented this motto and we can't be more proud of him, as we are proud of all our juniors who are representing our senior team this year.

Our strong and talented Junior section headed up by Richard Farrell and supported by an amazing array of dedicated coaches is laying a solid foundation for the future of Highfield.

What a fantastic time it is to be involved in this club! 🙏

👍🐿️🏏
