This month’s member spot light is Johanne!
What first got you into running? What made you stick with it?
I ran as a child and loved it. As a teenager I raced the 1500m for Trafford AC. I met my husband there and made friendships that have lasted a lifetime. Running gave me more than sport — I found people I fitted in with.
As an adult I ran only now and then, dipping in and out while raising a family. I had always wanted a marathon and always found an excuse. Turning 50, I decided this was the year. I entered Manchester Marathon and joined Styal RC because I felt clueless. Club-run chatter taught me plans, nutrition and tapering. Those first long runs were daunting; Styal runners made them possible. Thank you for the support and the knowledge.
How has the club helped you as a runner?
It gives structure, company and the push to get out when you don’t feel like it. I started with almost no mileage — a 5k parkrun felt hard — and everyone else seemed so good. Session by session I built stamina and found my running again.
Favourite memory so far?
Manchester Marathon 2025, in that unforgettable heatwave. Crossing the line meant everything. That year I also did XC, my first fell race, and an off-road ultra relay with clubmates: Welsh mountains, valleys, beaches and roads, navigation included. Staying in Sara’s caravan with that team made being out of my depth feel special. We finished together and celebrated in the pub.
One tip for beginners?
Be brave. Join in. Give it time. Learn from others.
Next goal?
XC season — and Manchester Marathon 2027.
