I’ve been wanting to say something about this for months, but I wasn’t quite sure how to navigate what I wanted to say.
I’ll keep it short because I’m not a scientist or a medical professional, so I’m not going to pretend to know everything! 😅
GLP-1s — the weight-loss medication.
They’re here, and they’re not going anywhere. And for many people, they are helping with significant weight loss.
But here’s where my thoughts come in…
I’m in the fitness game. I’m JoeysFitness, and I’ve always been in this game with the aim of helping people improve their overall fitness and strength — with weight loss often being a by-product of that.
But I know it’s not easy for everyone.
Actually, for some people, trying to lose weight can be a bloody torture journey.
So if GLP-1 medication is helping someone who has struggled with their weight, I’m not here to judge that.
But there is something I really want people to think about alongside the weight loss:
Your strength, your fitness and your muscle matter too.
Weight loss can involve losing both fat and lean mass, and that’s one reason I believe it’s so important to build some sort of relationship with movement and strength training alongside your journey — whether you’re taking a GLP-1 or not.
If you’re using GLP-1 medication and you’ve finally found something that is helping you get to a healthier weight, brilliant.
But please don’t let the weight coming off be the only goal.
Try, really really hard, to develop some sort of relationship with moving, strengthening and becoming a fitter version of yourself.
Because being lighter isn’t the whole picture. We want your body to be stronger and fitter too. 💪
And finally, just to say this: GLP-1 medications have been used medically for conditions including type 2 diabetes for many years, while their use specifically for weight management is a more recent development. We’re still learning about the long-term picture of their use for weight management.
I’m not here to tell you whether you should or shouldn’t take them.
I’m just saying: whatever route you take to a healthier weight, don’t forget to build a stronger, fitter body along the way. 🫶
