🏸 Hampshire Players Shine at the Badminton Cup Slănic Moldova

A group of our Junior and Senior players travelled to Romania to take part in the Badminton Cup Slănic Moldova, and what a weekend it turned out to be. From first time competitors to seasoned athletes, every player brought determination, fair play, passion, team spirit, and truly impressive badminton skills.

Our Head Coach Mark Peckham summed it up perfectly:

“It has been a great weekend in very enjoyable company, watching a bunch of like minded badminton nuts. Entertaining games from the ‘I have never played before’ crew to the last tense mixed final match of Tom and Elsa. From the well heeled international talent to brave parents and great juniors winning a hoard of medals. And gaining everlasting memories and friendship. These moments are priceless.”

❤️ Thank You
A huge thank you to Hampshire Badminton for supporting this event and making this trip possible.

Our gratitude also goes to Head Coach Mark Peckham, who supported every player - young and old, beginner to international level - with expert coaching, encouragement, and endless good humour.

To the parents: thank you for trusting us with your children, for travelling with us, and for becoming part of the team. Everyone naturally took on a role - cheerleader, organiser, chaperone, supporter, advisor, meal planner - and together created a warm, positive, unforgettable atmosphere.

A big thank you to Dorin Dediu, the tournament organiser of Badminton Cup Slănic Moldova, for all his amazing work and for putting together such a fantastic event. His efforts, energy and hospitality made this experience unforgettable for all of us.

Romania, you were AMAZING! 🇷🇴 Our juniors shone, our seniors battled, our parents played like legends and Coach Peckham survived a weekend with a bunch of badminton obsessed humans. 10/10 would do it again. 🏸💙

U16/17 Shires Match Report
Hampshire 19 v Surrey 2 1
Sunday 28 February 2026
Team: Henry Williams, Yushan Li, SaiCharan Kannan, George Manoj, Elsa Mitchell, Emma Wu, Evie Pearce, Emily Turgoose

Hampshire produced an outstanding team performance in their home match against Surrey 2, securing a superb 19–1 victory. From the opening mixed doubles through to the final girls’ doubles, the team showed excellent depth, composure, and teamwork across all categories. It was a highly impressive display and another strong result for Hampshire.

Mixed Doubles – A Strong Opening for Hampshire
Hampshire made an excellent start by winning all four Mixed Doubles matches. The pairs settled quickly and played with great confidence, putting Surrey 2 under pressure from the start. Several of the matches were competitive, but Hampshire remained composed in the key moments and converted that into a clean sweep. This strong start gave the team immediate momentum and set the tone for the rest of the day.

Boys’ Singles – A Full Sweep
The Boys’ Singles brought another dominant performance, with Hampshire taking all four matches. Henry, Yushan Li, Sai, and George each delivered confident displays, using strong attacking play and good control to keep their opponents on the back foot. There was consistency across all four courts, and Hampshire’s boys showed great focus to maintain the winning run.

Girls’ Singles – Excellent Control and Determination
Hampshire continued their momentum in the Girls’ Singles, again winning all four matches. Elsa, Evie, Emma, and Emily all contributed important victories for the team. A number of the games were closely contested, but Hampshire’s girls showed excellent resilience and control throughout. One of the standout moments came in a hard-fought three-set match, where Hampshire kept their composure to come through strongly.

Boys’ Doubles – Maintaining the Pressure
The Boys’ Doubles saw Hampshire continue their dominance with another four wins from four. The pairings worked extremely well together, showing strong communication and sharp movement around the court. Some of the sets were tight, but Hampshire consistently found another level when it mattered most.
This was another excellent category for the team and a key part of the overall result.

Girls’ Doubles – Finishing Strong
In the Girls’ Doubles, Hampshire won three out of four matches. The Hampshire pairs showed good understanding and fought hard in every rally. One of the matches went to three sets and was won with great determination, while Surrey 2 managed to take the final rubber in another competitive contest. Even so, Hampshire finished the match strongly and completed a highly convincing overall victory.

This was a superb all-round team performance from Hampshire, with victories across every category and a final score of 19–1. The team showed strong technical quality, resilience in the closer matches, and excellent support for one another throughout the fixture. A special well done to the whole squad for such a consistent display, and to all parents and supporters for their encouragement during the match
