It's been a busy week at Kuroten, with a strong emphasis on grappling kihon and kata in the kids classes. Whilst the cadets and adults have been working on kicks and kata and bunkai. Great to see everyone working so hard and our new starters settling in so well.

Well done everyone and Congratulations to our Stars of the Week! 😀🥋

We had a brilliant day at the Wivenhoe Community Day yesterday, running our stall and putting on a display. It was lovely to see so many of our students getting involved from our 6 year olds all the way up to our adults.

Winners of our punching competition to be announced soon!

Thanks so much to Wivenhoe Town Council for inviting us to be involved.

Instructor thoughts - Emotions and crying in the dojo

As an adult starting karate for the first time and feeling your first dose of adrenaline during class, can be exciting for some, or for others it can feel very overwhelming.

Many have only felt adrenaline in negative situations within their lives and are suprised to find that various emotions can appear without warning as they begin their martial arts journey. They know they are safe and control and consent are very much part of our training so why do they feel like this?

Everyone processess intensity and adrenaline differently; while some default to frustration or anger, others can find themselves overwhelmed by tears.

When you step into our dojo as an adult student, you don't leave your history at the door. You bring your life experiences, your resilience, and sometimes, quiet echoes of past trauma.

In traditional martial arts training, emotional releases like crying are too often mistaken for weakness. At Kuroten, we hold a different standard. We believe true strength is built in an environment of absolute psychological safety.

If your adrenaline spikes during a high-intensity drill and you find yourself crying; even though you may be thoroughly enjoying the session and you don't understand why it is happening, please know there is no shame, ridicule, or judgment here. It is often a physiological release, a completely normal part of the process for some, as the body learns to navigate stress within a positive, empowering scenario; in comparison to what you may have experienced before.

If you need a quiet moment to step outside and catch your breath, or prefer to wipe your eyes, ignore the tears, and keep training, this is your space. We listen to what you need, honor your pace, and support you every step of the way.

Over time, as confidence builds and the nervous system adapts, those tears often naturally shift into smiles, laughter, and a deep, grounded sense of self-assurance. Growth takes time, and we are simply here to show you the way.

Sable the Kuroten had a lovely holiday in Wales, he visited lots of beaches in Pembrokeshire including a beach where they filmed some Harry Potter scenes. He helped Tracey with her physio excercises performing slow motion kicks as she is still recovering from knee surgery and also worked with Liam and Tracey walking through some kata!

He understands that training around an injury is tricky but if you are sensible it is possible to build your karate training into your recovery which helps to keep your muscles strong even if you can't train the way you would like to.

Keep training everyone! 😀🥋

🥋 Good luck to all our incredible students collecting their GCSE results tomorrow!

Whatever envelope you open, remember this:

Your results do not define who you are.
Grades cannot measure your kindness, your compassion, your common sense, or your perseverance—qualities we see you demonstrate in the dojo every single week.

“Whatever your results, new doors will open for you, and we are sure they will be the right ones.”

We believe in you completely, and we are so proud of the person—and the young adult—you have grown into. Go get 'em! 💪✨

Giving back

At Kuroten not everyone grades at the same time, everyone progresses in their own time with no pressure at all to grade. However those who aren't ready, work really hard to support those who are, ukeing for them and understanding that the instructor and class focus will be on those who are preparing.

After a grading happens roles are reversed again and those who graded give back to the other students. This week it was lovely to see our new 5th and 4th kyus coaching individuals and small groups and helping them with their kihon.

This really helps the lower grades but also helps those who have graded up to understand the techniques in a greater depth.

Above all though the family feel of our classes with everyone supporting each other is something that we all truly value. 😀🥋🤗
