Peak week will not save you.

Everyone treats the last seven days like a magic trick. Carbs in, water down, sodium timed, and somehow a soft physique turns sharp overnight.

It does not work like that.

The research on peak week shows muscle thickness going up by around five percent and subcutaneous thickness dropping by around ten. That is real and it is worth having. It is also the last one to five percent of your look, not the first ninety five.

Here is why conditioning decides it. Loading carbs pulls water into the muscle cell. That fullness only shows if there is very little fat sitting between the muscle and the skin. If you are soft, the fullness is buried, and the carbs you cannot store as glycogen end up as water outside the muscle instead. You do not get sharper. You get puffier.

Lean athlete, same protocol, and every bit of that shows.

Peak week does not create conditioning. It reveals it.

Bring the conditioning and the last week is the difference between fourth and first. Turn up soft and the best peak week on earth changes nothing.

Competing in 2027? Your prep starts now, not in January.

The off-season is where shows are won. Here’s the checklist:

1. Get guidance from a coach now
2. Map out your events for flexibility and balance
3. Get your sleep right, recovery is a game changer for prep fat loss
4. Train at a gym that caters for your weak points
5. Get an honest assessment of your physique
6. Stay in a controlled surplus, don’t let it become a free-for-all
7. Track everything
8. Build your step base before prep
9. Practise posing all year round
10. Know your federation, the testing, and budget for show day

Save this and come back to it.

Want help planning your 2027? DM me COACH and let’s map it out.

There will never be a perfect time to start.

Life will always be busy.
Work will always be demanding.
Something will always get in the way.

One person starts and learns how to make progress around real life.

The other keeps waiting for life to calm down.

Four months pass.
Then eight.
Then twelve.

One has become stronger, leaner and more confident.

The other is still standing in exactly the same place, becoming more frustrated that nothing has changed.

You don’t need perfect circumstances.

You need to start and allow progress to happen around your current life situation.

Progress starts when you do.

YOU’RE NOT TOO SMALL. YOU’RE OVERDIETED.

One of the biggest mistakes I see natural bodybuilders make in prep is thinking they need to keep pushing harder and eating less.

More cardio.
Less food.
More fatigue.

Then they finally get lean… but they’ve lost the fullness and muscle they spent years building.

Natural bodybuilding isn’t about seeing how little food you can survive on.

It’s about getting stage lean while preserving as much muscle, performance and fullness as possible.

That starts with having enough time to prep properly, controlling the rate of loss and making adjustments based on how your physique is actually responding.

The goal isn’t just to get lighter.

It’s to step on stage full, dry and conditioned.

If you’re a natural bodybuilder planning to compete and you want your prep structured properly from day one, DM me the word COACH.

Training with the boys
Wickson Cheung
BEN KELSEY 🇬🇧
Gene Da'Breo 🇬🇧🇬🇩

What a way to start the week. LEG DAY.

Great catch-up, good energy and even better seeing everyone’s training absolutely soaring at the moment.

Performance is pretty much holding across the board. I’ve had a slight ni**le in the right knee for the last few weeks, so I didn’t push the hack squat too aggressively today.

We’ll monitor it. If it keeps hanging around, I’ll simply pull the squatting pattern for a bit, work around it and keep progressing elsewhere.

No need to force movements just for the sake of it.

SESSION:

Seated Hamstring Curl
3 × 10

Hack Squat
1 × 6, failed 7th
Back-off × 10

Barbell RDL
2 working sets
Top set × 8

Hip Abductor
Working sets to finish

Overall, great session and a quality catch-up with the boys.

Now time to get some food in and carry on with the day.

People think hitting your goals is convenient.

Ten hour shifts on rotation, five to six days a week. Up and in the gym at 4am, then straight into a full day. Meals weighed and prepped the night before and eaten cold at work. Hitting my targets at work and hitting them in the gym, at the same time, for years.

Nobody talks about that part. Everyone sees the stage photo and assumes the rest of it was easy.
It was never easy and it was never convenient. It was just decided in advance, so there was nothing left to argue with myself about.

Same goes for anything worth having. A degree, a business, a marriage, a physique. It doesn’t get convenient. You just stop waiting for it to be.

If you’re in the unglamorous middle right now, you’re doing it right. Keep going.

This was me the morning I earned my natural bodybuilding pro card 2018

Week 42 of contest prep.

People see the final look.
What they don’t always see is what had to happen behind the scenes to get there.

At the time, I was working a corporate job, doing 10-hour days, had a new baby at home and still had all the normal responsibilities that come with life.

Training still had to happen.
Meals still had to be prepared.
Cardio still had to get done.
Posing still had to be practised.
And every week I still had to find a way to move closer to the goal.

There was no perfect time.
There was just a goal that mattered enough for me to keep finding a way.

That 42-week prep taught me more about natural bodybuilding than any textbook ever could.
And a lot of what I learned during that process is exactly what I use with the athletes I coach today.

Because I understand what it takes to pursue natural bodybuilding at a high level while still having a career, a family and a life outside of the gym.

If you’re thinking about competing, I’ve put together 7 things I believe every natural bodybuilder should have in place before starting contest prep.

Comment PREP below and I’ll send it to you.

PULL DAY - BOR 180kg are back in

Brought the barbell bent-over row back in today. Last time I programmed these was November 2025.

I tend to remove movements like this when the arthritis in my shoulder starts playing up, so I’ll always auto-regulate based on how the shoulder is feeling.

Today it felt good. Strength is actually feeling pretty solid.

Took 180kg for a run out and probably had around 3 RIR, but the priority was keeping the form tight rather than chasing load.

Overall, very good pull session.

STRAP LAT PULLOVER
3 × 10

BARBELL BENT-OVER ROW
1 × 10
1 × 6
1 × 10 back-off

PLATE-LOADED LAT ROW
2 × 10
1 × 8

LAT PULLDOWN
1 × 10
1 × 5
1 × 10 back-off

PLATE-LOADED ROW MACHINE
2 x 10
1 x 9

CONCENTRATION BICEP CURLS
4 x 10

No gear. No hiding behind a bad prep.

Every gram, every week and every cue has to be right, or you turn up flat on the day it counts.

That’s the whole job. Getting naturals on stage full, dry and conditioned.

DM me COACH and I’ll show you how.
