⚽ Weekend challenge for parents: watch the game without following the ball for five minutes.

Watch your child's movement instead.

Are they finding space? Checking shoulders? Helping teammates? Reacting when possession changes? Communicating?

There is a lot of development happening away from the ball that is easy to miss from the touchline. 💚

💚 One of the best signs of development isn't a goal or an assist.

It's when a player loses the ball and immediately reacts. Or when they recognise a teammate needs help. Or when they keep asking for the ball after making a mistake.

Those behaviours matter because football constantly asks players to respond to what happens next.

⚽ Confidence on the ball isn't only about skills.

A player often looks more confident when they already know what's around them before possession arrives.

Scanning, body position and awareness can buy an extra second — and that extra second can make the technical action much easier.

That is why game understanding and technical development have to work together.

🧠 Football question for parents: does your child know WHY they made a decision, or only whether it worked?

Young players will make mistakes. That's part of learning. What matters is helping them recognise the picture: what did they see, where was the pressure and what other option was available?

We want players to become increasingly capable of solving those questions themselves.

⚽ A small detail parents can watch for this week: what does your child do immediately after they pass?

Do they stop and watch, or move to give their teammate another option?

Off-the-ball movement is a huge part of learning the game. A player can help the team without touching the ball simply by creating an angle, dragging a defender or supporting the next action.

Next match, try watching your child for 10 seconds after they release the ball rather than following the ball itself. You may notice a completely different part of their game. 💚

⚽ What is your child learning when they DON’T have the ball?

A lot of football development happens before the pass ever arrives.

Can they scan and see pressure?
Can they move into a better position?
Can they recognise the space a teammate has created?
Can they make the next action easier before they even receive?

That game understanding is a major part of what we want to develop at Box to Box — alongside the technical work.

The aim isn’t simply to create players who can perform a skill. It’s to help them understand when, where and why to use it.

💚 Parents: what part of your child’s game would you most like to see them understand better?

🏆 What should we actually be rewarding in young footballers?

Goals and skills are great — but development is much bigger than that.

At Box to Box, we also want to recognise the player who works for the team, responds well to mistakes, listens, learns, makes brave decisions and keeps trying to improve.

Those habits are what help talented children become better players over time.

For parents: what quality would make you proudest to hear a coach praise in your child — effort, attitude, teamwork, decision-making or something else? 💚⚽

What are we actually trying to develop in a young footballer?

Not just a better first touch.
Not just a better pass.
Not just a better finish.

We want players who can look, decide and move before the ball even reaches them.

That means sessions where children are constantly involved, making decisions and learning how their movement affects teammates — not standing in queues waiting for a turn.

That is a big part of how we coach at Box to Box.
