Bouncing back with a bang!
Our first away trip of the season yesterday as we headed over to Brunsmeer Athletic for the first ever time, and what a fantastic setup they have. The pitch was immaculate.
With Whitwell donning their brand new away kit and the sun coming through, it was a perfect setting for a grassroots Sunday morning.
Whitwell looked up for it from the off, playing the ball and finding the runners as the boys looked to take the game to Brunsmeer. With just 5 minutes on the clock, Whitwell opened the scoring. Bobby finding Freddie down the right, his cross was met with a header by Callum and the keeper initially saving before he prodded home the rebound.
With Whitwell playing the ball well and working hard on the transition we then went into a 2 goal lead. Hunter stepping out from the back, played a nice ball over the top for Riley to run on to. Riley controlled and fired in at the near post.
The confidence was flowing and that saw Whitwell go 3-0 up just 2 minutes from the restart. Jack clearing the danger on his own 18yd line up to Callum who controlled and found Riley. Riley’s first time pass into the run of Ollie. Ollie then hit a delightful shot from 20yds out into the far corner. We think he was happy we were recording the game for that one!
In for the halftime break and a chat, but in all honesty there wasn’t much to go over other than to keep going as they are and try to manage the game from here on in.
The second half saw a similar pattern to the first. Whitwell strong both on and off the ball, and still attacking with good intent. Roughly 10 minutes into the half, Whitwell scored again. Zak picking up the ball on the edge of Brunsmeer’s 18yd area, played a first time pass to Freddie. Freddie jinked past his defender before chipping the keeper brilliantly from an angle just inside the area. 4-0.
Almost straight from the restart Whitwell scored a 5th. Callum with a flick on to Theo from our throw-in. Theo squared across the box for George to slide in at the near post. A first ever goal for George in Whitwell colours.
The goals were thick and fast at this point. Whitwell’s 6th was a penalty. Up stepped Henry to power it straight down the middle. He’ll now breathe a big sigh of relief that the boys won’t be giving him a buzz cut for not scoring this season 😊
Brunsmeer did pull one back, but Whitwell finished the scoring through Riley. A rare route one ball up to Theo who controlled and played in Riley in the right channel. Riley skilled his marker to run in and finish at the near post.
Final score 1-7
Goal scorers: Riley 2, Callum 1, Freddie 1, George 1, Henry 1, Oliver 1
Our 2 MoM awards went to Riley and Bobby. Riley was in fine form yesterday playing initially as an inverted winger before moving over to the right wing. His footwork was neat, was a threat going forwards and contributed with 1 assist and 2 goals. Bobby was quality in midfield. He carried the ball well, kept possession with calmness and neat passing, but he also supported the attacks well from central areas. Both players took onboard what we asked of them before the game and executed perfectly 🏆🏆👏🏻👏🏻
It was great to see the boys playing like we know they can, supporting each other and showing their confidence on and off the ball. We hope to take that into next week’s Cup game at home against Wingerworth JSA.
