Social aspect: Lawn Green Bowling is a social sport that allows players to meet new people and make new friends.

It is a great way to socialise and interact with others, and many bowlers form strong bonds with their teammates and opponents. We are a totally mixed bowling club in Worthing and we are always keen to welcome new members of all ages and experience, to a friendly well-appointed facility, with no parking restrictions and a reputation for making new members quickly feel at home, guidance and coaching is available for beginners.

THIS WEEK ON THE GREEN – Club News and Activities
🗞️ Marine Gardens Bowling Club Weekly Report
Week Ending Sunday, 14th June 2026
Alan Paterson, Press Officer.

It was a week of mixed fortunes for Marine Gardens bowlers, beginning in fine style before momentum slipped away as the days progressed.

The week opened with an excellent away victory at Pagham in the PC Cup. A strong all-round performance secured a 70–56 aggregate win, booking us a home tie against Chichester in the next round. Leading the charge were Gerry Perch, Trevor Punnett, Duncan Gayler and Graeme Poole, who delivered a commanding 22–9 result.

Confidence remained high as we travelled to Arundel for a friendly fixture, where Marine Gardens edged a closely fought contest 62–57. Top Rink honours went to David Sayer, Julian Ogglesby, Les Gritton and Albert Leatham, whose well-crafted 17–11 win proved decisive.

From there, however, fortunes turned. Our Stracey League visit to Goring Manor yielded just 2 points, courtesy of the solitary winning rink of David Smith, Pam Duffield, Alan Paterson, and Duncan Gayler, who posted a solid 21–13 victory.

The week concluded with a tough home encounter against West Harrow, whose bowlers clearly enjoyed their return to the seaside. They left with a convincing 84–47 win, though Marine Gardens avoided a whitewash thanks to a spirited 19–14 triumph by Valerie Conway, Geraldine Whitehead, and Mark Berriman. Their determination provided a bright note on an otherwise challenging afternoon.

Our warm thanks go to all members who helped ensure our visitors enjoyed their trip to the seaside.

THIS WEEK ON THE GREEN – Club News and Activities
🗞️ Marine Gardens Bowling Club Weekly Report
Week Ending Sunday, 7th June 2026
Alan Paterson, Press Officer.

A week dominated by the weather, with two of our scheduled fixtures falling victim to the persistent rain and blustery winds. The first casualty was our Brodie Tray match at Tarring Priory, which will be rearranged in due course. The second was our WSBL home fixture, where both clubs agreed that travelling in such conditions would be fruitless. The points were therefore shared, five apiece.

Happily, the WSBL match at Arundel did survive the unsettled conditions, and Marine Gardens made the most of the excellent playing surface. A strong all-round performance secured a 3–1 victory with an aggregate score of 71–56. The clean sweep was only narrowly denied, our one losing rink going down by a single shot.

Top Rink honours went to Gerry Perch, David Sayer, Terry Ashley and—whisper it—Graham Ray, who delivered an impressive 21–12 win. Their efforts helped secure a very welcome haul of 8 points, which, added to the 5 awarded against Petworth, strengthens our bid to retain Division 2 status.

Here is hoping the weather shows a little more kindness in the week ahead.

Marine Gardens Bowling Club – Report for the Week Ending Sunday, 31st May 2026,

After opening their WSBL season with an excellent win over Middleton, Marine Gardens bowlers found the tables turned in their second fixture, away at Norfolk. The home side adapted well to their conditions, securing victory on three of the four rinks and taking the match with an aggregate score of 78–44.

There was, however, a welcome highlight for Marine Gardens thanks to David Barlow, Ken Leadbeater, Rod Smith, and James Albon, who produced a fine 16–9 win to ensure the visitors returned with something to celebrate.

The spell of warm weather has kept the green busy, with Club Drives and Internal Competitions well supported throughout the week.

Following our recent Open Days, we remain hopeful that several of the enthusiastic attendees will soon join our ranks and discover the enjoyment and camaraderie that bowls provides. Sincere thanks go to all members who helped make the open days such a success.

With no further competitive fixtures scheduled, it proved a quieter week on the bowling front.

On Thursday, members once again enjoyed the ever-popular trip to Brighton and Hove Greyhound Racing, expertly organised by our inventive social secretary, Wendy Wilson. As always, it was a lively and entertaining evening.

Marine Gardens Bowling Club
Weekly Report – Week Ending Sunday, 24th May 2026.

A quieter week on the fixture list brought no shortage of success for Marine Gardens bowlers, beginning with a superb opening WSBL victory against Middleton. This side came close to promotion last season. Marine Gardens delivered a commanding performance across the board, securing a 3–1 rink win and an impressive 73–45 aggregate, earning 8 of the 10 available league points.

Top Rink honours went to Rod Smith, Trevor Punnett, Duncan Gayler and Graeme Poole, whose outstanding 22–5 triumph set the tone for the afternoon. Even the sole losing rink fell by just two shots, underlining the strength of the team effort.

The momentum continued in our friendly against Lancing, where Marine Gardens again claimed three of the four rinks. Although the aggregate margin was narrower at 65–63, the home side showed great composure throughout. Congratulations to Roger Parrish, Julian Oglesby, and James Albon for steering their rink to a fine 20–13 win.

The week finished on a high with our annual President’s Day, a fun afternoon of inventive two‑set play across different rinks. Tactical mat movement became the order of the day, and the rink of Valerie Conway, Robert Wenman, Albert Leatham and Jim Gray rose brilliantly to the challenge, winning by 20 shots and collecting the President’s prize.

The ever-popular Spider competition was won by Angela Neale, who took home a bottle of whisky courtesy of President Norman. A free raffle and a superb spread of refreshments, thanks to the wonderful efforts of Gill Stannard, brought the day and the week to a warm and cheerful close.

Marine Gardens Bowling Club
Weekly Report – Week Ending Sunday, 17th May 2026

Members began the week in fine spirits with a well-attended social evening on Tuesday, enjoying a lively shuffleboard contest at Worthing Indoor Bowls Club. Another excellent night of fun and camaraderie, expertly organised by our ever-reliable social secretary, Wendy Wilson.

This week served up a trio of contrasting fixtures, with Henfield providing the friendly “sandwich filling” between two competitive encounters against our near neighbours, Worthing.

Marine Gardens opened strongly with a home victory in the Brodie Tray, winning 3–1 and securing an aggregate score of 68–57. Gerry Perch and Graeme Poole set the tone with an excellent 23–12 Top Rink performance, helping us bank a very welcome 8 early‑season points.

Later in the week, Worthing reversed the outcome in a Stracey Shield match, edging the contest by taking two rinks, drawing one and losing one. Their 66–52 aggregate win earned them 7 of the available 10 points.

Marine Gardens did, however, dramatically claim Top Rink honours: Nour Dissem, John Nettleingham, Perry Cairns and Tim Baldwin held their nerve to score two shots on the final end, sealing a 16–14 win and adding a little warmth to what proved a decidedly chilly afternoon.

Between these league fixtures, we welcomed Henfield for a friendly comprising five triples. Marine Gardens won three of the rinks, but Henfield’s stronger overall scoring saw them take the aggregate 77–69, meaning bragging rights were evenly shared. The standout Marine Gardens trio were Peter Guy, John Nettleingham (again making his mark), and Trevor Punnett with a fine 20–11 win.

A week of mixed fortunes, competitive spirit, and some excellent individual performances, all signs of a season beginning to take shape.

THIS WEEK ON THE GREEN – Club News and Activities
🗞️ Marine Gardens Bowling Club Weekly Report
Week Ending Sunday, 10th May 2026
Alan Paterson, Press Officer.

This was the week in which Marine Gardens crowned its new Supreme Champion. After an excellent final, David Barlow lifted the beautiful trophy, overcoming Angela Neale in a match that kept the crowd fully engaged from start to finish. Angela made the brighter start, opening up an early lead, but David stayed in touch, gradually applying pressure before pulling ahead in the final quarter to secure a 15–8 victory.

The standard of play was a credit to both finalists, and the warm applause from the many spectators reflected just how much the match was enjoyed. The presentation was followed by afternoon tea, our sincere thanks to Duncan and Anne for the delicious rolls and cake, before members enjoyed a friendly roll-up—a fitting conclusion to a lovely occasion.

Earlier in the week, our bowlers returned from Lancing with four league points after a Brodie Tray match in which the rinks were shared two apiece. Lancing, however, claimed the overall honours 74–60. Top Rink for Marine Gardens went to Clive Wootton, Pam Duffield, and Tim Baldwin with an excellent 24–19 win.

Mixed fortunes followed in our two friendlies.
Norfolk proved too strong on the day, winning on three of the five rinks and taking the match 87–70. The home side’s bright spot came courtesy of Robert Wenman, Rob Hurst, Graeme Poole, and Jenny Ashman, who produced a fine 20–12 victory.

The week concluded with a much tighter contest against Tarring Priory, where the rinks were again shared two apiece. This time, Marine Gardens edged the overall score 60–57—too close for comfort. Top Rink went to David Smith, Alan Paterson, Ken Leadbeater, and James Albon, who delivered an impressive 21–11 win.

Sadly, our Open Day fell victim to some much-needed but very unwelcome rain. Even so, one brave couple ventured out, tried their hand, and has expressed a firm interest in joining us. Let us hope for kinder weather—and a busy green—when our next Open Day arrives on 24th May.

THIS WEEK ON THE GREEN – Club News and Activities
🗞️ Marine Gardens Bowling Club Weekly Report
Week Ending Sunday, 3rd May 2026
Alan Paterson, Press Officer.

It has been a quieter week at Marine Gardens, with just one friendly and one Brodie Tray fixture to navigate, but both matches provided plenty of talking points.

Storrington were our visitors for the friendly 4 triples match and clearly enjoyed their afternoon by the seaside, securing wins on all four rinks and finishing with an impressive 79–49 aggregate. The closest contest came from Jim Masters, Alan Paterson, and Leon White, who fought hard to avoid the whitewash and scored four on the final end, narrowly losing 22–21. Storrington were deserved winners on what was a warm and good-spirited afternoon of bowls.

The Brodie Tray match against Worthing Pavilion proved a tighter affair, with the honours shared at two rinks apiece. Pavilion, however, edged the overall shot count 69–59, earning themselves six of the ten league points. Top Rink for Marine Gardens went to Jenny Ashman, Perry Cairns, and Duncan Gayler with a well-crafted 17–10 win. Credit also goes to Terry Ashley and James Albon, who held their nerve superbly to secure an 18–17 victory after a high-quality, hard-fought game.

Attention now turns to the start of our Club Competitions, which promise to bring plenty of activity — and friendly rivalry — to the greens over the coming weeks.

This coming Saturday, we host the Supreme Champion match, followed by a club roll-up and tea. On Sunday, we welcome visitors for the first of our Open Days, where we hope to attract new members and highlight everything Marine Gardens has to offer.

Marine Gardens Bowling Club – Report for W/Ending Sunday, 26 April 2026.
The new season has begun in the best conceivable way for Marine Gardens bowlers, with three full-house Club Drives, an evening roll up, one friendly and one competitive match — all played in glorious spring sunshine that made the greens look at their absolute best.

We were delighted to see new member Pam Duffield make an immediate impact by winning the inaugural Spider competition. A fine way to announce yourself.

On Tuesday, ITV News asked members of Marine Gardens Bowling Club to discuss their top issues ahead of local elections, pothole repairs, town centre redevelopment, and better end-of-life care were among the issues of the players at Marine Gardens Bowling Club.

Our first competitive outing of the season, a Brodie Tray match against Steyning, produced an excellent 3–1 victory. Terry Ashley, Ken Leadbeater and Jim Gray claimed the first Top Rink honours of the year with a convincing 22–12 win. With victories in two further games and only one loss, the overall 71–57 shot margin secured a valuable 8 league points.

The friendly match against Goring Manor proved to be a tight and entertaining affair. Marine Gardens edged it with two wins and two draws. Tim Baldwin, skipping Peter Guy, Liam Clifford and Angela Neale, steered his rink to Top Rink honours with a fine 24–15 win. The overall score of 60–52 reflects just how keenly contested the match was.

With the dry weather arriving early, our watering team has already swung into action. Their efforts should help ensure the green remains responsive and enjoyable as we settle into the season.

The setting at Marine Gardens looked magnificent this week, and long may that continue. Our sincere thanks to the Friends of Marine Gardens team for the excellent upkeep of this popular Worthing green space, admired and enjoyed by both residents and visitors to the gardens.

We are also looking forward to welcoming potential new members at our Open Days on 10th and 24th May, running from 11am to 3pm. Please do encourage friends, neighbours, and anyone curious about bowls to come along and “have a go.”
Alan Paterson, Press Officer.

A New Season at Marine Gardens.

"May I offer all our members and supporters a very warm welcome to a new season of bowling at Marine Gardens.

It gave me immense pleasure on Saturday to officially declare our new bowling season open!

It was wonderful to see so many familiar faces attending our opening drive on Saturday, and a particularly warm welcome to all new members joining us. We are delighted to have you with us and hope you will soon feel right at home here at Marine Gardens.

The green looked fantastic and played extremely well. None of this happens by accident or chance. I want to say a huge thank you to Bob for overseeing our greenskeepers and the watering team; to Jenny, Brian and Jill for carrying out the refurbishments at the club; to the committee; and to all the volunteers who have worked so hard over the winter months to get everything ready for us. We are incredibly lucky to have such a wonderful team and facilities.

Bowling is about many things: it is a sport of skill, precision, and concentration. But more than that, it is about friendship, community, and having fun. Whether you are here to compete seriously or just to enjoy a roll-up and a friendly chat, this club is for you.

I hope the coming season is filled with great competitive matches, ambitious personal standards, and, most importantly, plenty of laughter and good company. Let us hopefully enjoy the weather, the bowling, and being together.

I wish you all health, happiness, and good luck on the green!

Thank you, and let us all look forward to a successful season!
Norman Deegan. MBE.
