Khabib Nurmagomedov vs Edson Barboza *REVIEW*
UFC 219. December 30th 2017.
Khabib is arguably one of the most exciting fighters in the UFC at the moment. In a momentary McGregor-less UFC, we look for undefeated fighters who put on show stopping fights. Khabib is one of those fighters. Always supplying thrilling fights that without doubt go to ground in the first few seconds, being a world class grappler not many can handle him once he get his opponent on their back. The Brazilian, Edson Barboza, being a phenomenal kick boxer and holding a solid three win streak, was no exception to the rule. Within the first two minutes of the first round Barboza was on his back taking ground and pound from Khabib.
Khabib has an intense level pressure that is relentless. Always looking for bombs and takedowns, before mauling his opponent. However, I can't help but find Khabib's approach to this fight already to be more animalistic than skilful, relying solely on his ground ability and toughness. Something I hoped Barboza, being a skilled kicker and excellent mover, would take advantage of. Despite landing big kicks and attempting to capitalise on Khabib's direct and flat footwork, he could not get the wall of pressure that is the Dagestani.
In rounds 2, and 3, Barboza had lost confidence, energy and strength in his legs and core. Khabib then capitalised, yet again forcing Barboza against the cage and pounding.
The only way Barboza could have beaten Khabib would have been to move frequently and unpredictably keeping at arms length before throwing multiple counter strikes, a stand up knockout was his only chance. He landed a great spinning kick to the face in the third round but one wasn't enough to stop the Russian.
It has to be handed to Barboza that he really tried hard, he fought until the end and maintained good composure. He just didn't have a chance to let go of his kicks and get into a rhythm after taking such a he battering in the first round.
It is said Khabib went the full 3 rounds in order to get some fighting time because he was so excited for the fight. He was clearly prepared and clearly in the zone, adding yet another win to his perfect record, easily.
Does Khabib deserve a title fight yet? Could Khabib put himself in front of either Tony Ferguson or Conor McGregor and win? That is the question.
He deserves it yes, however, if he plans to take that belt of McGregor and put both of those phenomenal fighters through their paces, he needs to work on his footwork and stand up game. When he enters the octagon against McGregor he cannot rely on ground game. Yes, McGregor is weak on the ground especially compared to Khabib, but he'd have to get him there first. Walking directly with no guard, straight legs, slow punches and predictable combos is going the get him caught by the likes of McGregor.
Summary:
Barboza valiantly fought to the end against the most aggressive grappler and undefeated Russian MMA maestro that is Khabib. Khabib did what he does best and nothing else, Barboza was expected to take advantage of Khabib more with his kicks and failed to do so. Barboza looked unbalance, weak and tired by the second round, Khabib looked confident and prepared. Deserved win by decision.
