Ten years have passed since that fateful day.

Worthing United F.C rounded off their pre-season with a lively encounter against Shoreham FC II at Lyons Way — and it didn’t take long for things to ignite. A flurry of early goals put the Mavericks firmly in control, setting the tone for an entertaining afternoon packed with attacking intent.

Just before kick-off, I was stood to the left of the seated stand when I spotted Worthing United’s club chairman, Mark Sanderson — with whom I’d exchanged a couple of emails before the match. After a quick introduction, it was nice to talk about the club and share my early impressions of the ground. It gave the afternoon a grounded, personal start.

Worthing United got off to a flying start, opening the scoring in just the 4th minute. A well-constructed move from the back saw the Mavericks string together a neat sequence of passes before Dan Hills calmly slotted home for 1–0.

Barely a minute later, they doubled their lead. A teammate found acres of space down the flank and whipped in a low ball into the box, where Hills was on hand again to tap it in for his second of the game. 2–0.

It was three inside eleven minutes. A corner wasn’t fully cleared, and Marcus was quickest to react — hammering a low, driven effort on the rebound that left the Shoreham keeper no chance.

Early on in the first half, while I was stood to the right of the home dugout, the ball came over my head, prompting me to retrieve it and throw it back into play. Following that, Worthing United manager Mark Curram asked if I knew who any of the Shoreham players on the pitch were. When I mentioned I was a neutral and groundhopper, he showed a keen interest and seemed genuinely pleased someone had travelled in neutral. A simple exchange, but it was great to have that moment of connection right from the touchline.

The fourth came in the 16th minute. A ball recycled from out wide was worked back into the danger area, and Lee was there to finish clinically. 4–0.

From the restart, Shoreham caught the Mavericks napping. A long-range strike from just outside the box looped over the Worthing keeper and into the net — 4–1 — a surprise goal that gave the visitors a brief lift.

But Worthing kept their foot on the gas. In the 22nd minute, a cross into the box took a favourable bounce, and Ethan found the back of the net from close range. 5–1.

At half-time, I made my way around the pitch and down the steps to the tea hut, where I picked up a fresh portion of chips for £2.50. I forget the gentleman’s name, but after taking my order he said, “I haven’t seen your face around here before — what brings you to Worthing United?” After explaining that I was a groundhopper and down in the area for a few days, he was very complimentary of my efforts and pleased I’d chosen to visit the club. Moments like that — brief, kind, and unprompted — always stick with me. It’s the kind of warmth that makes groundhopping feel more like visiting a community than just watching a game.

The second half was a quieter affair, with Shoreham showing more resilience and structure. Credit to the visitors, who tightened up considerably after the break and limited the Mavericks’ chances.

Worthing eventually found a sixth around the 75th minute. A break down the wing led to a squared ball across the box. The initial runner was bundled over, but Liam, arriving late, was perfectly placed to slot it home.

At full-time, I asked Mark Sanderson, the club chairman, if he could help me out with the goal scorers’ names — it always makes match reports feel more personal and accurate. Ironically, I can’t recall the name of the gentleman who kindly provided the details (likely the programme editor), but I’m very grateful for his help.

A seven-goal thriller played out against a stunning, scenic backdrop, topped off by some of the friendliest club staff you could hope to meet.
