Tonight (Weds 25th Jan) will be the last training session for a short while. We have had to make the decision to put the Dojo on hold temporarily as student numbers are not currently viable.
Tom and I will still be training to keep ourselves 'match fit' but without the overheads of venue hire until we have sufficient numbers to resume classes.
This decision is quickly reversible in the advent of sudden interest and we are also available for one-to-one or private sessions.
Additionally if anyone has a recommendation of an alternate location other than Steyning that they would find more convenient, please let us know and we will consider it.
Bujinkan Ninpo Dojo Sussex
Traditional Japanese Martial Arts of the Samurai and Ninja in Sussex
11/01/2023
Your friendly neighbourhood instructors.
Our first training session of 2023 is this Wednesday 11th January. An ideal time to try the martial art of Budo Taijutsu and First Lesson Free if you are new to our dojo or the art.
Classes are then £10 for a 2 hour session and we train from 7.30pm to 9.30pm on Wednesday evenings at Penfold Church Hall, Church Street, Steyning.
We are a very inclusive friendly class, all over 17's welcome, all levels of fitness, you really can ease into training at your own pace, it's not a boot camp, and even the warm up is just a low impact loosening of joints and muscles. To start with, loose clothing is all that is required, there is no rush to buy a uniform. Training consists of learning movements and techniques that have been passed down for centuries. These are performed in a relaxed manner and controlled to avoid injury, and include using and defending against strikes and kicks, grabs, throws, locks, chokes and a variety of weapons, of which we use safer training versions. We are preserving historical methods but also focussing on modern day self defence application.
If you decide after a few lessons that you would like to join the dojo properly, there is an annual fee of £20 to cover insurance and we can advise on clothing and equipment and where to aquire these. You will also then be eligible for gradings whch take place several times a year, depending upon attendance and progress. Certificates come from our Headquarters in Japan, the cost of which is subject to the Yen/Sterling exchange rate but are usually around £20 for kyu grades.
Our ranking system has only three official belt colours, white for 10th kyu, green belt then covers all the grades from 9th kyu to 1st kyu, differentiated by badges if the student wishes. Ladies may wear a red belt instead of green if they prefer, and then the black belt dan ranks begin. The sooner you begin, the sooner you will progress, and as they say, a 10,000 mile journey begins with one step!
If you have any questions, let me know.

Bujinkan Ninpo Dojo Sussex is the Dojo of John Gardner Shihan (Master Teacher) with current day to day running by Adam Hurley and Tom Beattie.
We practice traditional Japanese martial arts blending historical methods with modern day application. Striking, kicking, locks, throws and a variety of weapons are studied within a safe controlled environment. We aim to rely on technique and correct body positioning rather than strength or brute force.
The class is very friendly, there are no macho egos on show and we welcome students from diverse backgrounds with or without prior martial arts experience.
You learn at your own pace and expand your own comfort zone as you progress. The first step is to come along and try a session, and personal one to one or small private group training is also available.
