Some great advice here.

In close-range, non-consensual combat, the non-striking hand will often have a more productive role than a passive “guard”. The “pulling hand” (hiki-te) can be used to increase accuracy through proprioception, to open up pathways for strikes, to disrupt the enemy’s posture, etc. Yes, practise keeping your guard up when the non-striking hand is unoccupied ..: but also practise putting it to use. Active is best; up when at rest; never empty and down.

"In practice, if you understand its principles and if you practice the basics (kihon, i.e. kata), the muscles become naturally trained and considerably strong. But if you do not thoroughly understand what is called practical application and speed, everything else is worthless."

Ohyo #3, before being given the Hakuba variation.

Good advice.

Good advice.

"A defending arm must always be able to instantly transform into an attacking arm. Defending with one arm and attacking with the other is not true bujutsu.
Achieved with further development, the waza of defending and attacking at the same time is true bujutsu."
