"Theme Of The Week: UNDERWATER
We understand that this can cause a flutter of nerves for many parents. For us, submersion at Baby Squids isn't about 'dunking' your child. Quite the opposite in fact - we have a carefully-introduced, gradual and child-led approach to this vital part of their aquatic education. It’s one of the most powerful tools we have to help your child become confident and safe in the water. And we never rush it as a happy, confident child who can control that space will be a lover of water for life :)
Our songs and activities this week start looking below the surface, letting little ones experience the magic of toys disappearing and reappearing to float to the surface. A crucial part of early years learning is mirroring parent behaviour, so we'll see some Mums or Dads who are comfortable to show their little ones how happy they are to be underwater too!
What Are The Benefits?
* The Power of Natural Reflex! Babies are born with a special reflex that's perfect for swimming? It's called the Diving Reflex (or bradycardic reflex). When an infant's face is submerged in water, they instinctively hold their breath, and their heart rate slows down. This reflex is strongest in the first six months of life and gradually fades. By introducing gentle underwater play and submersions early, we are working with this natural instinct to help children become comfortable and confident in the water. We do not rush or force submersions in our classes, our focus is to support you to help them to use their natural, in-built ability. All submersions are child-led and at each individual's child's pace.
* Building Confidence and Trust! Submersion is a powerful tool for building trust between you and your child, and your child and the water. Every time you gently submerge them with a clear verbal cue—like ""Ready, go!""—and bring them back up with a big smile and a loving cuddle, you are reinforcing a positive association. They learn that the water is a safe place and that you are there to guide and support them. We build on this trust slowly with layered experiences and focus on you individually so we make sure you are progressing at your child's own speed.
