The 2nd team took on Division 2 side Sporting Knavesmire in their final game of pre-season before their season opener next weekend.

Goals from Louie Kirkham and Luca How saw them to a 2-1 victory over the visitors. Some excellent football played by the lads, with the team being good value for the win.

🚨 MATCH RESULT 🚨

The 1sts were made to work hard for their three points today in their season opener against Rufforth United.

Indeed, despite a newly implemented fine for conceding I the first 10 minutes, Pop found themselves 1-0 down inside the first 5 minutes. Not to be deterred, Josh Winn levelled things after some neat play saw him through one on one to slot past the on-rushing goalkeeper.

Matty Ellison then followed up not long after, again after some nice work down the left hand side where the cutback found Ellison to smack home from 6 yards out.

Half Time: 2-1

Initially after the break it was then pretty much all Poppleton, as Josh Winn got his second, quickly followed by his hat trick including bending a sublime effort into the top corner from the edge of the box. Poppleton were also to miss two penalties during this time, which came back to bite them moments later.

Rufforth tapped home from a free kick and this shifted the momentum. The deployment of a long throw specialist meant it was backs to wall for Poppleton. Unable to deal with the aerial threat Rufforth got another one back at 4-3. With just 30 seconds to go, yet another long throw landed just underneath the crossbar as a Poppleton head tried to clear it ended up in the back of the net. From a seemingly comfortable position to 4-4.

That was, until straight from kick off Poppleton sent one up toward the Rufforth area and winning the first aerial challenge before Winn was taken out and yet another penalty awarded. Ellison stepped up and did his best to miss but found the back of the net with literally the last kick of the game.

Not the prettiest performance against a dogged and determined Rufforth side, but Poppleton take their first 3 points of the season.
